I may be looking at getting a new GPU soon, I want a new 1 for March for the new games which are coming out, like Crysis 2 and the rest, my 8800GTX isn't holding up anymore and it's upsetting to not be able to max out all these new games.
I'm running an i7 920@4GHZ and I game at 1920x1080.
I'm very partial to Nvidia (Sorry ATI guys, but after the brilliance of the 8800GTX I have no reason to doubt Nvidia cards) also I never run SLI, I only go for single cards generally.

Options are:
Wait until march and see if Nvidia bring out something new/better in my budget
Get 1 of these 480 GTX's for £194.99
Get a 470 GTX for £143.99
Get a 570 GTX for around £300 (It would be this 1, just due to it being so damn nice looking: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-143-GW&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1010)
Get a 560 Ti Gigabyte SoC for £249.99
Stretch my budget to a 580 GTX and get anything, really

Just looking for opinions, I don't really have a max budget, I just want something that will serve me as well as my 8800GTX has done, maxing out games for the next 2-3 years.

That's what I was thinking, either a 570 or 580.
580 is a big stretch to me, it's do-able, but still it's a lot more than a 570.

Would an OC'd 570 match the 580 GTX in performance, or will the lesser memory effect performance at some point in the future?

For two to three years use, i my opinion, you have these choices.

480 @ £195 + £30-£35 For a custom air cooler to deal with the heat. Uses a hellva lot of juice, but just a crazy powerfull card for the price.

470 @ £144 .Comes with a cracking cooler. Could add another for fantastic sli later on in the year when they will be really cheap. Not as powerfull as the 480, but still sucks lots of juice, heat delt with by its sweet msi cooler.

570 @ £300. New, near enough the same power as a 480. Less heat output and power useage.A very nice custom cooler(with adaquate case cooling you should barely hear it at load). Would handle you res with ease and can't see any game this year making it struggle or making a 580 at the current price worth it. :) - Best choice imo

560 @ £200(GTX 560Ti OC). A very nice card at a very nice price. New tech, same benefits as the 570. Should handle 1920x1080 fine. But the extra £100 invested in the 570@300 is worth it imo

Hope that helps :D

SLI 470 would defeat all options.

Yeah of course, I've never ever SLI'd though, I don't know if my board even supports it or if I have enough space for SLI, I know for a fact though 1 big card will be fine, though.

Another vote for the 570 GTX then.

Yeah looks like I'd go for the 570GTX, thanks.

Next question is, is there a particular brand to go for?
I was sure to go for the 1 I linked, but there's another gainward 1 which is pre-overclocked slightly, which also supports voltage tweaking. The Phantom doesn't support any voltage tweaks, but the cooler is much better.

1280MB Gainward GTX 570 Phantom, 40nm, 3800MHz GDDR5, GPU 750MHz, Shader 1600MHz, 480 Cores

1280MB Gainward GTX 570 Golden Sample GLH, 40nm, 4000MHz GDDR5, GPU 800MHz, Shader 1600MHz, 480 Core

What variables should I consider?

Depends if you want to go single card route or SLI, if single card may aswell get a GTX580 and be done with it which to be honest would last 2-3 years easy at 1920x1080.I would also strongly consider the GTX570 Phantom if going single card route too.

If you want to go SLI then the 2x GTX470's Frozr edition ones are the best choice for sure for the money.

I am incredibly happy with my GTX580 and even if some SLI setups beat it to be honest you will not see the difference anyway really at that res at least unless you running a 120hz monitor but even then the GTX580 should cope extremely well still.

If you had a choice on the Gainward cards between the Phantom or the Golden Sample GLH, would you still go for the Phantom?

My monitor is only 60Hz, so no, won't be much difference.
It's defo between a 580 GTX or a 570 GTX.

@antran I would wait, but there's some games now I kinda wanna play maxed as well

If you are overclocking then the GTX570 golden sample otherwise Phantom.

The GTX580 is worth getting if you got the cash and planning to try 3D.(The cooler is very good, one of the best i've experienced even nearly as good as what my Vapor-x 5870 was)

Are even the stock coolers on the 580GTX's good? There's a massive difference in price between the Palit and the rest of the cards.

Also are the 580's good for overclocking at all? Or should I go with a 570 and clock it to a similar performance? I guess the memory won't impact me that much since my res is only 1080p.

Well with my Palit GTX580 (the £380 one) i idle about 38-42c usually and 65-75c max.(depending on game, like Metro 2033 hits about 75c whereas Dead Space 2 is 65c or so, Mirror's Edge with 16xQAA hits 65-70c.)

I am using a custom MSI Afterburner fan profile but the noise isn't that loud at all especially when compared to other reference coolers on other cards.I've not tried clocking my 580 yet but people say they are great at overclocking same with 570s and like i said depends how much you want to spend really as you can't go wrong with either.

I personally think the extra £80 or so is worth it if you are planning to go to a 30 inch monitor sometime with the 580.

Does the Palit support voltage tweaks for overclocking?
I'd probably have my fan at 100% constantly like I do with my 8800.

My monitor is a 27", I don't think I'll be going bigger than that. So the choice defo seems to be between the 570 or 580. Going to have to have a think.
