Thinking about getting a wii as its all people seem to talk about these days, but Im concerned that its more of a gimmick than a console.

I dont have hours and hours to spend playing on it but at the same time dont want to be bored after 30 mins game play,

The alternatives are obviously a 360 or ps3 but Id have to save a little bit more for one of those.

I just dont know what to do for the best!

Currently debating that myself, Wii or 360, i much prefer the games on the 360 but since i only have 1 TV in my house i don't think my wife would like me playing games all the time that she has no interest in.

Therefore i plumped for the Wii, purely because we can both play and enjoy it without debating over who gets to use the tv and when.

I figure if i get Mario & Sonic, Wii Fit and Smash Bros then it will add to my household harmony rather than damage it :p

When I first saw Mario Galaxy at my friends house I thought the control scheme was a gimmick, using the wiimote to pick up these 'star bits' but it's not until you play it that you appreciate it's not a gimmick at all and it all comes together nicely.

IMO you won't get bored after 30 minutes. Best console I ever bought tbh, although I do still use my PC a lot for serious gaming. Don't get one at the current inflated price tho

Personally, id go for the PS3. Seems to be the most powerful console out atm, with the best selection of games.

Best selection of games? AAAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA....

....

AAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHHHHHHHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

You must have started early on the mulled wine have you?

Im a Sony fan boy but they just dont have the games to warrant it at the minute.

The gf will prefer the wii too so I think I may go for it!!

Thats another thing, is it just a kids console? Im 26 and dont want the games to mainly aimed at kids?

Bored of my wii.

I'm gonna keep it. As i owe myself to finish Super Mario Galaxy, think I'm the only one in the world who doesn't like waving his hand around collecting those star bits, I just find it highly annoying.

Anyways, if i turn on a console after work nowadays with what little free time I have it's the 360 for me. The Wii is gathering dust, I thought I'd get that same feeling I got playing super mario 64, but alas i have yet to expierence the same kind of fun on the wii.

For me it boils down to:

360: great if you play games alone.
Wii: great if you play games with other people in the same room.

The Wii is incredibly shallow in my opinion. You'll play Wii Sports for about 30 minutes then get bored of it. The only games with substance are Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, and that is literally it, the rest are shovelware and party games. I was lucky to sell mine for 300 quid to some silly mother with young kids, and unless Nintendo sorts out the third party support and games library, I won't be bothering with another one.

Go for 360 or PS3. They both have way better selection.

Agreed. If you want to play on your own or against others on the Internet then the Xbox 360 is a better option. There's been some fantastic deals surrounding the Xbox 360 lately too.

Wii is great for parties and playing with "non-gamers" though.

I had a wii then sold it after nearly a year, then picked up another and returned it unopened a week ago. I sorta want to give mario galaxy a try but at the same time ive never been a fan of the 3d mario games. To me they just don't seem like mario games, almost like you could plonk any character model in marios place and it would make little difference =/

You're probably going OTT with your point somewhat suggesting Wii Sports has 30 mins in it, but it has had a solid play as far as my Wii is concerned, both on launch, at parties (especially) and just for fun since. So basically you didn't enjoy it, right... and a couple of your mates? :p

Did you not bother playing Strikers or Excite Truck? And why can't party games have substance? Or do you mean sat on your own playing a game like Oblivion type of substance?

I agree to a point about 'shovelware', but Zelda, Resident Evil 4, Super Paper Mario... Good shovelware though, no? Hell, even The Godfather works well with the controls despite sub-par graphics.

Can't really blame the Wii for being a victim of it's success here, lots of greedy developers.

...and unless Nintendo sorts out the third party support and games library, I won't be bothering with another one.

I mean, time doesn't sort out the games library, does it? :p

Quick look down the list of 3rd party titles and I'm fairly happy. Medal of Honor, Umbrella Chronicles, Zack and Wiki, Nights, PES... even some of the 'shovelware' like Bully looks good.

It's debatable, currently, as to whether the PS3 has a 'way better' selection of games on it. It's undeniable that there's a very healthy catalogue of excellent games on the 360, but it's what you actually want from a console that counts surely?

If you dont have any consoles, get a 360. If you already have a 360, i wouldnt bother getting a Wii unless you dont mind spending the money on it now and then selling it on in a few months time.
