To window or not to window?

From where I sit, I cant see the window on my case as my case is on the left side of the desk.

But I catch a glimpse leaving the room and it makes me happy lol

I remember when i had an ATC 201 with a window. It was great to see it all lit up! I did try my best to make it look tidy inside!

Personally prefer cases without windows (external aesthetics are more important) - windows get grubby over time, novelty wore off and didn't touch a windowed case again; that and I stare at the monitor not the insides of my computer to game ;)

Perhaps but it is very nice as you walk in before you power up seeing the heavily deep black gloss but cant fully see through.

My formula (which I'm still trying to get right) - get a beautiful case, get beautiful components which are colour themed to match (or make them void of colour), get cables to either be the same colour as components or complementing colours based on accent colours in your build. Position case so that you can see your own handiwork. Then once assembled - peer through the window, appreciate your work daily and be happy. :) For bonus points add optional lighting to highlight your components in such a way that it isn't obvious for a touch of understated elegance and GPUs whose lit colours reflect the load they're under without ruining the aesthetics of the build. :) In short it absolutely has to be windowed as aesthetics are everything!

Windows were briefly interesting at the very beginning when the only option was to cut it yourself.

IIRC it was at about the same time d.i.y. watercooling started to become popular and there was something interesting to look at. And it was interesting because it wasn't just a load of off the shelf PC parts bolted together.

Unfortunately it also started the escalation of the cost of PC parts based on their appearance rather than anything else...

When I built my last system I really struggled to find a case that:

  • Didn't look like it was designed for/by a teenager
  • Didn't cost an arm and a leg

ive got a window case, but only because it was a pre-built system and looks okay actually, never used to have them as the computers were away hidden under a desk or in a position you wouldnt be able to see inside so be pointless..

but if you have it on top of desk then window is a nice option, i myself will certainly be replacing my case with another window one just because of how my on the desk setup looks

Hello,

Ridiculously subjective question but;
Have many people bought a non-windowed case because they don’t care about the looks but after the build thought damn that looks really nice I wish I could look at all the pretty? :D
And conversely have many people bought a windowed case and been annoyed/distracted by the amount of light pollution it lets out into the room?
Not talking about added LEDs just the default motherboard and graphics card lighting.

Cheers,
Nothin

I did that (bought a case without a side window) and decided I'd make my own side window to show off my new toys :D

Mine looks like this except its clear acrylic and I went with a white/black/red theme (been looking at blue lights for years and I'm sick to death of them) :)

I chose black/white SP120's over Noctuas because they look better same with the BeQuiet CPU cooler (black). White cable extension, PSU is black and black/red theme on the gfx card. It sits on the desk so can't bear looking at a bare case. If it sat on the floor I probably wouldn't care one way or the other.

LED strip lights are brightness controllable so just enough to say "hey, I'm here!" if they're lighting up the room they're too bright.
