To Acer X34 Predator owners,

Please test your monitors for coil whine on the following web page with your monitors set to 100hz (or as high as they'll overclock) and report your results for coil whine in this thread.

http://thume.ca/screentunes/

I've read many reports of this monitor experiencing coil whine to some degree on various forums, but would like to know your experiences. Is it just the vocal minority experiencing this? Or are most people getting it and putting up with it?

I am experiencing distracting coil whine on my newly delivered X34A during general web browsing, even with the monitor at only 60hz. At 100hz it is noticeably worse.

Please don't be shy. The more responses we get (good or bad) the better :)

I would like to add a poll to this thread if I can. How do I do this?

Have a little bit on mine. Tbh it was frustrating to start off with, but i honestly dont notice it now. Once or twice a week might get a whiff of it and be like oh yeah there it is, but intents and purposes i forget about it again within a couple seconds.

I got mine second hand and paid half the rrp so im not overly fussed. If i paid rrp and it came out the box like it, it would be getting returned out of principle as its not acceptable when spending that kind of money brand new.

Mine is otherwise a good panel, small amount of backlight bleed in top and bottom left corners, and the usual ips glow, but browsing and playing games ive yet either of them to be noticeable or affect my experience. Infact the only time i notice they are there or reminded off it is when i turn the monitor on from sleep and it loads up with the predator symbol

At the end of the day it comes down to individual sensitivity to these kind of things if you even notice them / if it bothers you. £1000 brand new, they can stick it, second hand, i'm happy to live with them, doesnt overly bother me

Why would u even be bothered about something u cant hear without sticking ya ear on the monitor? Do u game in complete silence with no sound or something?

And no i cant hear anything on mine and had mine since release date

Not a peep out of my X34, and it's from Nov 2015.

Why do so many people spend so much time trying to find faults with something like a monitor. If we only relied on what we read here then every single X34 (probably every single monitor) is a mash up of poor quality parts that the manufacturers have deliberately put together to line their own pockets with no thought about their reputation or customers.

I think the silent majority are perfectly happy with their monitors and we really do put the fear of God into those looking to buy one. Just look at some of the worried potential purchasers on here.

Rant over, move along, nothing to see here now, :)

I didn't have to deliberately look to hear this coil whine - it is audible during normal web usage from a sitting distance of ~4 feet away over the noise of my case fans. It occurs enough for it to be distracting to me during normal use, although it's not really an issue while gaming as it would be drowned out by the noise from my graphics card alone if I had the speakers turned off.

To give an idea of how loud it is, on the test web page I linked in the OP, the coil whine can be heard from outside the room!

Manufacture date on my monitor is March 2016. Responses so far seem to indicate that those with monitors from earlier batches are alright.

Not the case though. Earlier batches (mine is from the first) do whine.

Doesn't bother me as it is largely dependent on what you have on screen, however I can see how it would annoy some (and truth be told, if it were any worse it would).

After hearing about all the issues and contemplating for a day or so I ultimately decided against purchasing. The fear mongering certainly worked on me which is a shame as it looks like the perfect monitor.

Maybe I'll grab the upcoming revised X34P but for now I'll be holding onto my hard earned cash.

Not X34 here but do have PG348Q, I got pretty perceptive ears so pick up on whine easy and on a few sites which are mainly white with black, rain forest for example, I can pick up whine very slightly when room is dead silent and PC fans are down. Other's cant hear it at all, so I think I got sensitive ears. This was the third panel as well, prior two PG348Q's had terrible wine.

For most intents and purposes as it only happens in very few situations, don't bother me and on occasions it does, I drown it out.

I sent mine back because I'm getting DP signal drop outs. Just had it 1 day and the place I bought it from said they couldn't find any problem so they have sent it back to Acer. Hope they fix it? I don't want a broken monitor back.

Wasn't it an issue above a certain brightness level? Or a below a certain level? Whatever it was it was it was so far out of my level of useability it wasn't an issue. If it was turned it up or down to silly levels you could hear it but in normal use it wasn't an issue I seem to remember.

Mine has some coil whine but I had to switch off the speakers completely to hear it. Most of the time I use it with audio from the game, YT or just music so it doesn't really make difference to me.

It also has light bleeding but to be honest I can see it only on completely black screen so doesn't bother me much. It's just technology that is not perfect yet.

TN panels have less of this problems but then you will not have such colour depth and viewing angles.

OK I think this is silly. My monitor is a Dell 2407WFP which I have had for years. I have never noticed any "coil whine" (was this even a phrase when the monitor was built?) and it's working perfectly to this day. If I visit that webpage it really does play music - it's pretty loud and very obvious.

So we've proven there are pathological cases which make some monitors (many monitors?) noisy. But if the internet didn't work people up into a fever about it then I bet hardly anyone would have noticed.

Background is I'm seriously considering buying a X34 as well and was getting worried about this. I am no longer worried!

Mine wasn't affected by brightness levels at all. I read about that as being a potential solution on the Acer forums but it didn't work for me. Mine seemed to be a result of the overclock, but could still be heard at 60hz and even 50hz on some web pages.

V v tiny amount at one particular point, so I'm more than happy with that :)

V tiny amount whilst running that however it's the first time I've ever heard coil whine from mine and I had to have my ear pretty much on the panel.

You're both very fortunate! Mine could be heard for all but about 4 seconds of 1 cycle of those bars expanding and contracting. Loud enough that I could hear it from outside the room.
