Today Arcades

Yes, you are correct. I cant be doing with the heat and energy use of a CRT when i build my new cab but i am considering one of the retro boxes that authentically recreates the look of a CRT with Scanlines etc on a LCD. That said i really love my arcade stuff however i really am not that anal about a perfect recreation. If i was i would find a high end CRT and go with a MisterFPGA. Honestly, with my older eyes Raspberry PI with a few hundred of my fav games on a 27" IPS LCD with a nice attract mode will sort me. I have found a fantastic looking Pi image with amazing attract mode done by Dynamic Duo, think i will go with that.

- Used to go to swimming club in the next town, saw my first ever video game - Pong - Dad used to treat me to a game after swimming
- Kept it up and started to go on my own, they eventually upgraded to Space Invaders then PacMan
- Remember when you could trip machines into giving credits by giving it a shock with a dismantled piezo-electric lighter?
- Started to take tube rides into London with my mates (used to be 10p to go anywhere if you were under 16) - went to Crystal Room in Leicester Square. The heyday of arcade games when everyone turned the volume up to max
- Started coding my own games on VIC20 and then C64 - our school had ONE computer. You dialled the local Polytechnic mainframe on the phone and used an acoustic coupler
- Started going to pub, my local had tabletop cabs - Missile Command, Dig Dug, LadyBug and MrDo!

Showcase Cinemas - It was always a tradition to have a blast or three at Sega Rally.

If I were building a cabinet now, I would go for LCD; sourcing a CRT and one of a decent size would cost a fortune.

Yeah CRTs are ridiculous, everyone is on the “retro” bandwagon thinking they can get more than they are actually worth and inflating prices :(

I did see a 32” B&O the other day for £40, would have got it if I had the room.

Isn't a 27" monitor widescreen?

It will be smaller but you can pick up a 20" 4:3 LCD pretty cheap, keeping with the square look

just looked at it and there doesnt seem to be a great deal of older games. Most look like they are the newer bigger ones like the Transformers, Halo and Mario Kart ones according to the Game Vault area.

OMG Dig DUG was my favorite, love to keep pumping but just stop shy of finishing the monster then pump again haha

I also take tube into London and visited Crystal Room, Child fare was £1.10 for me and pocket money covers that and a meal in China Town

Haha I live in Sinfin and work on the Wyvern.
I used to live in Sunnyhill, spent many many hours in the arcades in Normanton and Harry's (people used to wait for me to finish college to play Xmen Vs Streetfighter) in town.. when I was growing up there was so many fish and chips shops or video retail shops that had arcade games.

I now live in manchester, got a trip with some friends from coming up from mansfield to go to the arcade club in Bury next weekend, thou there are some arcarde machines in the most random of places in MCR. There's some in the urban outfitters and Arkwrights and a few of the yuppy pubs.

I was in blackpool this summer and was quite disappointed with the games, ended up just playing the 2p/10p pushers, I've almost brought SFA2 but then next day I decided to move house/jobs so I've been thinking of getting one for the house now (10 years later), but tbh I don't think my wrist can take it like they used to as playing a few rounds on SFV with the arcarde stick makes me feel it for days after lol

HAHA Same here, unofrtunately for a while i used to live just off Browning Circle and that was a horrible place but mostly grown up on Stenson Road(Went to Derby School before it was Derby Moor).. Used to frequent Shipleys and Harrys every now and again but mainly the chippys such as the one that used to be across the road from the Blue pool, chippy on the corner of Wordsworth Ave in Sinfin, Grampian chippy as well as the ones in Normanton (one near the plumbers just off the bottom of Normanton Rd) to play the arcades. Where ever there were machines me and my brother probably went..

I enjoyed it, however as it was a weekend there were loads of kids about and a lot of them were not treating the machines with care and seemed to be running about unhindered even though there are signs that say they should be accompanied. It was a good day out and cheered me up since the depressing trip to skeggy.

I have a cab that i build from scratch but didnt finish and i am looking at buying a flat pack from Arcade world, you have just reminded me, i have been meaning to email them to see if they have any pics of videos of fully built cabs.

Arcade Club in Bury and the one in Leeds are great. I don't quite feel the need to go to arcades as much now though as I have two machines of my own - a two player Mame machine and an Arcade 1Up Star Wars which covers most of the games I want to play. But I love it when I do go to be able to play games that I can't play at home and to get the whole ambience of loads of machines playing at once.

If I had the money I'd have a few more replica cabs and setup a mini arcade in a garden 'office'. I'd like to have six or so, so I can get them all going at once and invite a bunch of people round to play. One can dream, eh?

Just got back from the Arcade Club in Bury... quite different from what I was expecting but it was good fun.

Not too busy, not too many kids running around but I did have to rescue a toddler from a basket ball game.

The top floor was the best, managed to finish The simpson, Turtles, Goldern Axe and Double Dragon.
Decided Robocop was still far too hard... the street fighter machines are a bit hit and miss with joysticks and buttons working well/correctly.. but when you have an arcarde stick for yourself at home, you're not used to sluming it on well used joysticks/buttons.

Well worth the admin fee and would go again, we joked about having a birthday party there as the food was so cheap (compared to manchester prices) and good as well!

Fond memories of when you could complete an arcade game for 10p, other kids would all stand around cheering you on. The satisfaction was amazing….

Star Wars
Operation Wolf
Outrun
Shinobi
Super Hang On
Bubble Bobble
Chase HQ
New Zealand Story
Final Fight

…….to name but a few.

Grew up in a seaside town with its own arcade. Spent many a happy summer just hanging round it even when we didn’t have money to play anything. Keep promising myself I’ll build a stand up cab for myself but still not got round to it.

Yeah, I have fond memories of family summer holidays and we often went to the West Country. A few of the old seaside towns like Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Weston-Super-Mare and the arcades in those places. Ghost 'n'Goblins, Star Wars(sit down cab), Space Harrier(full hydraulic cab), Xybots(with the twisty joystick), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Spy Hunter(sit down cab), Chase HQ and probably the one that I sunk the most money into - Gauntlet(used to play with my dad and younger brother).

Back home, there were two local towns that were nearby me that had decent arcades : Deal and Margate(both seaside towns). Deal actually had 3 arcades in the town : one in the local cinema; where I nearly managed to complete Midnight Resistance(with the rotatable joystick) - they got rid of the cab the following week; one which also housed a snooker club, and that had Afterburner, The Simpsons, Back to the Future 2, Robocop, R-Type and Aliens(based on the film) - which had the volume turned up really loud; and the final one is still functioning(sort of) on the seafront, and at one time that housed : Mercs, Final Fight, Space Invaders '90, Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road and Street Fighter 2(which was always the most popular game).

I suppose it was always interesting seeing if the home ports of the arcade games could some how capture the essence of the original arcade versions. They were different times.

I did visit the old Casino arcade in London a few times, but they seemed to winding down when I went in. They had a lot of shoot 'em ups in there.

I do remember playing Sega's Wing War at Gatwick airport with my brother back in the early 1990s - I doubt there's an arcade there now. I also remember playing Buck Rogers at a motorway service station in the 1980s and Return of the Jedi in Dover Hoverport in the late 1980s. Those types of places probably don't have an arcade cab there now - unless it's like Guitar Hero or those dance machines.

Such a shame CRT TV's can never make a come back. They should never have closed the factories making them or at least kept one making them as they would make an absolute killing. I would love to see a kickstarter type thing raising money for them to start a new factory but apparently it would be so expesnive.
