God damn! thats a big ass bee! Brings back memories of disturbing wasps nest in woods.....running around undressing due to having them up my trouser legs.....found one in my boxxers later on that night    that was the one that stung me just above my ****! grrrr.

Bees are cool though, wasps are like neds/chavs.

Never found hornets to be aggressive - wasps on the other hand are undoubtedly the chavs of the insect kingdom.

Haven't read this part before:

"..stinger of the Asian giant hornet is about a quarter-inch in length, and injects an especially potent venom that contains an enzyme so strong that it can dissolve human tissue." :(

"..the sensation described as feeling "like a hot nail through my leg."

Sounds like a hoot

dam Bees  Dont like anything which Stings

nooooo!!! your a bad man!!! Bee`s are wonderful and they will never sting you unless you provoke them. Wasps are plane evil and will sting you simply because its all they seem to be good for.

i like Bee`s :) although there dying by the millions now as they are suffering from a "bee plague" a tiny mite that infects the hives and spreads and then the poor bee`s are eaten from the inside by the mite :(

Me too, im like a little girl when a bee flies up close to me, you'll probably catch me screaming while running away flapping my arms about like a pansie.
Im just not convinced that if one flew near me or even landed on me it wouldn't sting me.

it wouldnt sting you, if a bee lands on you its simply attracted by the colour of what ever its on, keep still and he will fly off once hes caught his breath and realised your not a plant, although screaming like a girl i guess you could be called a panzy...

The mite is called a verroa mite (I'm sorry I don't know the spelling). A teacher of mine (Dr.Bowen-Walker) did his dissertation on it. Apparently it's quite rare to find a hive without infestation. There was a wild hive in my parent's chimney; I tried to save it by getting someone to remove and rear the hive but my father destroyed it because they couldn't come at a weekend :(

The main bee that everyone is aware of is the apis meifera lieneaus (sorry spelling not accurate again probably) which is indeed one of the few species of bee that dies when it stings you. Almost no wasp or bee intentionally stings anyone. There is no control over the sting reflex it is an automatic response to the stimulation of hairs on its arse end.

If you kill a wasp (please do this repeatedly) and don't utterly mutilate it you can hold it up (a sensible person will do this by its wing) and stimulate the hairs (a biro or pencil will do) you will see the sting shoot out then retract- great biology lesson for kids and adults alike!

Interesting stuff, I await finding a dead wasp, pencil at the ready :D

I personally hate wasps, But i dont mind Bees. However if that beast came flying around my face, i think i might just pass out and avoid all the nasty bits. Its the noise that gets me, sends shivers down my spine. :(

Edit: Speaking of large flying insects... A few years ago, was working for a landscaping company over the summer break, and one of these landed near some wood we were moving at the time,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sawfly

Nearly wet myself, and then found out later it was harmless :o
