A 2007 Honda Civic Type-R GT.

So, what did I think?

Looks.. crazy. Currently looks very 'futuristic' but I feel this could be its downfall and in 5 years time it will have dated horribly.

Interior was quite nice to look at - the Alcantara sports seats were very comfortable indeed but the plastics quality was a tad iffy in quite a few places. All the controls you needed were close to hand and for a hatchback it was pretty well loaded with kit.

So, on the road. Steering felt quite light, clutch was nice. What about the engine? Well it's no secret that I dislike VTEC engines, and to be honest, the power delivery of this one still doesn't take my fancy but the noise was absolutely great - nail it in 2nd and it makes a great noise all the way to the redline. The VTEC kick is not as pronounced as it was in the previous model Type R and appears to come in lower this time, circa 5500rpm.

It's also very refined, which I felt odd for a Type R. It had cruise control, etc etc and I felt that I could quite happily set the cruise, stick Radio 2 on the stereo and do a reasonable length journey except for one problem. The ride quality leaves much to be desired - it's very firm indeed, which would be at home in a raw car but somehow feels out of place in this Civic.

Oh, and one thing that drove me insane - it rattled like crazy. I had a rattle from inside the dash, a rattle in the headlining above me, and a rattle from the boot area. It was a virtually brand new car so this was very worrying indeed.

So, overall?

An odd car. It's less raw than the previous Civic in some areas, yet more so in others. It's a bit of a mismatch of a performance car - the huge level of toys, the more refined feeling encourages you to cruise yet the awful ride quality spoils this. The firm ride encourages you to throw it around, yet the extra weight and the slightly less sharp handling spoils this as well.

I was left wondernig who would buy one of these. If you are a VTEC fanboy who loves the raw feel of the Type-R Series then... don't buy one. Buy the previous model. If you want a more refined drive, but love the feel of a hot hatch then... don't buy one either. Buy a Focus ST.

It's a shame becuase it's not a bad car but it strikes me as more of a jack of all trades but a master of, I am afraid, none. Except sounding good.

Thanks for your review - the magazine reviews have said similar things

Shame as I think it looks great but I'm not sure who they're targeting. Perhaps the JDM version will be more focussed even though (IMO) it doesn't look nearly as good!

Similar to what I thought when I test drove it too, the ride was horrible (well the same as my fiesta actually, but I wanted something less crashy), and when the last type-r was released the hot hatch market wasn't all that, but now there's lots of very good competition, and just doesn't really compare.

No rattles in the one I drove though, random British build quality :p

I totally agree with the 'futuristic' aspect of it too, sure it looks good now, but so did digital dashes in cars from the 80s, now look at them!

Its aimed at the GTI/ST market this time round, slightly softer, but still great on the track (better than the ST), but refined enough to sit on the motorway with Radio 1/5 (radio 2 is just wrong :p )

I still dont like the looks, the interior p'eed me off after 3 hours and the outside is just too damn wacky.

But the engine and handling are still bloody good, put it this way, if i get as good a deal as i got with the ST, in 2 years, i will be having one.Ride is OK for this type of car, the prev CTR was stiff, this one has the balance right imo.

Golf Gti is still king in this sector, if you want a track machine buy the Megane. If you want the best sounding and best overall engine, buy the ST.

Am thinking your rear end may used to more soothing leather nowadays :p

I can tell a crap ride when I find one - the new Civic has a crap ride. The old Civic had a firm ride which entirely suited the car.

Just like the Primera. When it came out it looked futuristic, a few years down the line and it looked VERY dated. Never looked good though, at least the Civic looks a bit... quirky.

Suprised to hear about the ride tbh. I'd have thought they'd have pitched it at just on the firm side of comfortable.

Fox as you've test driven more cars than everyone else I know put together, what percentage would you say have been unaccompanied and whats your best bet for getting an unaccompanied drive? Small dealership, chat about the car a lot first, cut straight to the chase?

Yeah, it's a bit of a mess, seems there were too many people on the commitee that designed it :p

Did it have the big wheels? I imagine they make the ride even more interesting with those if it didn't!

I would say about 1 in 3 test drives are unaccompanied - no real technique, I just chat about the car and explain I'm looking for something a little more <whatever the cars strengths are> than my current car.

How does that work with French cars? :p

Last French car was the Clio 182 Cup - that was an online Renault promotion 2 years back. Filled in a form, got a call, went down, they gave me the keys, off I went :p

So the converstation went something like....

Hi, im looking for something that will rattle to bits, fall apart and break down all the time.

Dealer: ah yes you come to the right place. :p

Did you pull up in the Mondeo?

Not today, no, but I have done for some previous test drives.

Ford dealer took one glance at it and tossed me the keys to an ST220, and said 'have fun', for example.
