Today marks twenty years exactly since the "Big Nuke".

In the period leading up to the nuke, we had experienced problems with the forum which culminated in the database becoming corrupt. We were closed to new registrations and doing anything in the back end (editing posts etc) was painfully slow. It was decided that the forums would be rebuilt and the database blitzed.

The OcUK Forums were closed for a day or so and finally came back online very late in the evening of Thursday 17th October 2002 following many F5 keys being destroyed.

The mod team of the time were pre-registered to stop anyone pinching their usernames. A few members managed to register before midnight and that's why you'll see some people with a "Joined" date of 17th October 2002. We were very busy on the 18th October as the membership woke up an almost completely empty forum with just a handful of threads and very few users. We'd changed from the purple background and gun avatars to the now familiar blue background and avatars based on gangsters a few months earlier when we upgraded from vBulletin 2.0.0 to 2.2.5 so there was some familiarity but there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth because all post counts had been reset by necessity.

On the 17th October 2002 we had 91 user registrations. Of these, 26 have been online in the last month.

On the 18th October 2002 we had a massive 1,173 user registrations and of those, 258 have been online in the last month.

By the end of 2002, we'd had 2,448 people sign up to the forums and over a quarter of those have been online in the last month.

To commemorate all those damaged keyboards from back then, OcUK have kindly offered to give away a Ducky One 3 keyboard to one lucky person*. All you have to do is pick a date between 17th October 2002 and 17th October 2022 and the person who gets closest to the date we've already selected can choose a keyboard from the range here. This giveaway is only for people in the UK and to qualify, you must have made 100 posts before today. Please post the date in the format DD-MM-YYYY so that there's no ambiguity. Any other format will be ignored. If two people are equally close to the date we've chosen then the person with the best ducky pun in their post will be the winner. Entries will close at 18:00 BST on Monday 24th October 2022.
You don't have to include a duck pun in your post but you can see it will improve your chance of winning.

Were you around in those days? Are you one of those early sign ups? What are your memories of the Big Nuke and the Overclockers Forums from back then? How has your life changed between then and now? It would be nice to hear from people who have been around since the early days as well as entries to the giveaway.

* Forum mods (Admins, Dons and Underbosses), OcUK staff and OcUK vendor reps are not permitted to enter the giveaway

A reminder: Please post the date in the format DD-MM-YYYY so that there's no ambiguity. Any other format will be ignored.

I would hate for someone to lose out because they've not followed this.

I'll just repost this because we've hit 100 posts so it'll be on the previous (man sized) page.

Remember MoS :D?
I didn't until you just mentioned them. Wow, yes. I often wondered if there was some kind of exploit going on there that we weren't aware of.

I don't think I ever admitted this before but at the peak, I had seti running on a small server farm for quite a while until someone in the office noticed that the fans were consistently ramped up so I gradually removed the clients over a few weeks.

I also remember a time when old posts used to get purged to try and improve performance, so you had to ask for threads to be archived, hopefully those days are behind us now but it does mean a lot of posts from pre-2006 are lost (presumably forever?).
Yes, we used to prune threads on a regular basis and to this day, I still don't really understand why we did it. I think there was a fear that the same thing might happen that happened before and the database get corrupted. It's a real shame because even now, I still sometimes try and find threads that I know were there. I don't think it was performance rated.

Wolfy mentioned earlier about Eyedot hosting and we used to joke that if ever there were performance issues that it was because he'd fired up CS on the server :)

Reflecting on the past 20 years of the forum I actually don't feel like all that much has changed, really. Obviously some posters have come and gone, the software has improved a lot, but the typical content/style of posting is pretty similar relative to the wider changes that have gone on in the world/internet. Let me put it this way, if you plucked a forum user from 2002 and put them on the forum today I think they'd get along just fine once they were up to speed with the topics of discussion
The membership has aged. We used to get a lot of threads regarding issues for younger people. There were always threads about school, exams, which Uni, all that sort of thing. Our membership has got older and we don't have the younger members we used to have. Apart from that, I agree completely, we're not that different now.

The judges have their scores, the votes have been counted and verified. The next person to be evicted, in alphabetical order, you are live on channel 4, please do not swear, what do points mean? You can win this awful trophy, the scores on the doors, I’ll have a P please, Bob. Our star baker tonight could have won a speedboat or a cuddly toy.

Ladies and gentlemen, the date we selected in advance was 01-01-2008 which is the date that Ducky were formed. Not only did our winner pick the correct date but he also picked it for the same reason as us.

He definitely did get ducky :D

Our well deserved winner is @Sirrel Squirrel. You were spot on. Please can you send a PM to @fiveub to sort out your prize.

I'll go 01-01-2008 when Ducky launched. Maybe I'll get ducky.

Please join me in congratulating @Sirrel Squirrel and here’s to the next twenty years.
