Great price on the 290x, i assume the 290 and 290x will crossfire?

The 290 range seems to dropping price really quickly, especially the second hand value of the cards. I guess we have mining to thank for that, people don't seem willing to risk their money for cards that could have been used for mining it appears from reading around.

Not sure, but I imagine they would - although your 290 would throttle the 290X obviously :)

I'll poke Gibbo to give you a proper answer as I don't want to mislead you.

Not a GPU expert, hence I said I'd ask Gibbo.

EDIT: spoken to Gibbo: "you can yes. but not advisable. bottleneck as you suggest"

This is not correct. The cards can run at different clock speeds without an issue. There will be no bottlenecking, as you put it. It will run fine, so don't worry.

Great price on a reference 290X.

Yes there is.

Not on a benchmark no, but in actual gaming you get more of the so-called stutter.

Trust me I have tried a pair of 290X, one with Hynix, one with Elpida, though benchmarks were fine the experience was not as smooth as it was with a pair of matching Elpida, or Hynix cards for example.

So yes it works but in my experience I found a pair of identical cards did seem to give a smoother experience. Admittedly it was some time ago so AMD could have modified their drivers to take into account cards with different memory timings etc.

P.S. The price is even better when you consider the GOLD Games award too. ;)

Still does not sound right. I can run my cards at drastically different memory clocks (so will have the same effect as marginally different memory timings ala Elpida vs Hynix) and get perfect performance. (no stutter)

I have also ran Elpida and Hnyix cards before as well without issue on Tahiti so i just can't believe that would cause a serious issue on Hawaii. What i think was likely an issue was launch drivers, (which im guessing you tested on) or perhaps one of the cards was faulty or possibly unstable, be it stock or overclocked, or some other issue was at play.

I could be wrong, but i just can't see it personally.

It doesn't really work like that, the clocks will define the bandwidth, the memory timings the response time, an example being that X79 had double the bandwidth of Z68 yet Z68 had better memory performance in games using the same sticks because it's controller had lower latency which meant better response.

Think of the memory clocks/timing as like two roads, both have the same top speed limit but one has a better surface that allows better acceleration (boy I suck at analogies).

I am running on a 50" TV so any stutter is a lot more visible on such a large panel at 1080P.

Since I stopped mining I removed the second card anyway as one 290X at 1080P plays everything. :)

Great Price on 290X. Dumb questions:

1. Why all of a sudden people quit mining at once?
2. Does PowerColor permits changing cooler? Reference coolers on 290's are problematic as I heard.

:)

:)

1. Very little profit in it at present, unless your dedicating your time to it.
2. OcUK have exclusive RMA terms which allow this.
3. It's not a price drop, were using marketing funds to write down aged stocks.
4. Remember your getting 4 games as well. :)

LOL I didn't know that OCUK allows this :) Great, another reason to buy gfx cards here (Glad I did :).

Yeah price is just awesome (even better with games)!

EDIT:Gibbo, any link to that OCUK allows removing stock cooler? I can't seem to find any info on that. Just to be reassured (T&C's) in case I need to.

I'd be so tempted by this if Today Only wasn't limited to 1 per person...
Running crossfire 290s means 1 card would be a performance drop, plus not sure I could go back to a single card unless the performance was at least equal (or close).

Great price though.
