Todays experience: Two cars you'd think I would hate

It's a car, drive it!

Nah, i agree with Fox. Sense of occassion is important.

In my opinion, the better the sense of occassion, the better the car.

For my next car purchase, its one of the things highest on my list of priorities. Many cars are technically accomplished, but leave you feeling cold.

Any more test drives on the list Fox? XJ6 TDVI? A8?

excellent, so we might see fox dreaming of e60's with sport kit instead of e39?

I don't have a hope in hell of affording a £35k for years yet, so dont worry I'm still an E39 fanboy as they are actually achievable :p

Err, this is the first time you've seen one close-up in the flesh!?

No but in a sort of irrational hatred of the car that dared replace my beloved E39 I just..... dismissed them.

If it had an Audi badge the build quality would have surpassed the Beemer ;) :D

I've heard so much about the Pheaton that I'm actually surprised you felt the quality wasn't up to the 5, where did it fall short exactly?

Some of the plastics used for the centre console did not feel *quite* as nice as those used in the 5. The design of the console itself and certainly the look of the car was a class above the 5, I loved the way it said 'PHEATON' embossed in a chrome plate inside the instrument binncale, for example.

You could say I'm being picky, infact, I am being picky. It was a fantastic car and you would not say 'oh dear' at the build quality when you stepped inside.

I don't think it's bias, I stepped out of the E60 and straight into the Pheaton, so it was a direct comparison. The seats in the Pheaton were more comfortable than those in the E60 though, for sure.

For most stuff? I fully agree.

For £35,000 luxury cars? Sorry, but it's an important part.

For those of you who are hardly suprised I like these cars, here are the reasons I thought you'd be suprised...

a) I am, or was, a huge critic of the idea of the E60.
b) People perceive that i have a huge anti Volkswagen bias

:)

Whats next? Hopefully a damn E39 530i Sport Auto if I can find a dealer actually willing to let me drive it properly - used car places tend to be considerably more hostile than franchised dealers.

ah,now this is making more sense.
the model you test drove was clearly an abused and shoody or sub standard version...hell,they even spelled the car's NAME incorrectly ;)

@Fox...try the W12 petrol and/or the V10 diesel models and let me know what you think.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the review. An impressive lump, that 6-pot oil burner, is it not?

Hope for BMW's of the future yet then ;)

Had you not seen a nice E60 before this one fox, i mean close up? I ask as i was of the the exact same opinion as you, but as you know i started to like them, after seeing one close up in a dealership.

I tended to ignore them before this :p

I've got to take our 530d back next week as it's having a new somethingorother so I'll get something new to play with for the day!

With all this warranty work being done to your father's 5, are you not a little worried about buying one from a non-warrantied source? :)

The E60 5 series styling really grew on me. I love 'em now.
