Hey guys,

Im trying to work out whats wrong with my toilet. I went into my bathroom a few months back and there was water all over the floor. I cleaned up the water but couldn't see where it was leaking from or anything. It didn't happen again for ages. Then my toilet started to keep filling the cistern after a flush to beyond the overflow pipe. It would always cut short of overflowing the cistern itself but it was wasting a tonne of water doing so.

I went to the loo the other day, came down onto my PC (directly under my bathroom) and low and behold all this water starts coming down via the piping. After looking upstairs it seems it had been filling too much and even though had stopped it was enough to spill water everywhere. This has caused the grouting on my floor tiles to crack and pull up also (yay another job to fix!).

Anyway as of last night I went to the loo before bed and it wouldn't stop filling. Theres no stop tap on the input to the cistern so I was pretty frantic as I didn't know what to do. Luckily I did find out that if I run the sink tap just as the float is lifted the toilet will stop supplying water. This bit is confusing the hell out of me and im wondering if any of you would know what could cause that?

Cheers.

Sounds like your float needs adjusting or a whole new valve system (which isn't anywhere near as big a deal as it sounds)

Ive adjusted the float so that its super sensitive in hopes that it cuts out before it can overflow, obviously it doesn't work so I guess its the valve system. Cheers!

I'm just saying here but, we have those in our cisterns and have on a couple of occasions had a similar thing happen where the cistern is constantly filling. It turned out there was some grit preventing the float rising properly. i took the cap off the top (in your picture its black, on mine they're red) and blew off the bits and cleaned off any other muck that was in and around, clipped it back on and it works fine. For the sake of 2 minutes it might save you £15-£20.

I haven't managed to get out to B&Q or wherever today so ill give that a go. Thanks for the feedback!

Is it not still under warranty with it being less than 12 months old? I'd expect it to last a lot longer than that. Think my toilet was like 18 years old before it had a similar problem.

If it does start leaking again you could turn your water supply off at the stopcock overnight as a temp solution. Make sure to turn off your boiler though as that could get damaged with no water flowing to it.

It possibly is but the whole bathroom suite was installed by a family 'friend' who turned out to be quite a cowboy. Currently the toilets having issues, the tiled flooring is all ripping up, the sink isn't functioning properly and the shower is only firing out cold water. Oh he also left the grout on the tiles too long and as such its hardened into the detail on the mosaic tiling. In addition to that he also left a gaping hole in the wall about the size of a football that I wasn't told of and had to fill in myself with expanding foam. The rubbish was also left sprawled all over my garden which I also had to get rid of myself as well as do the painting and sort out the extractor fan. Overall he did an excellent job!

Thanks for the feedback!

Inlet valve washer/diaphragm. Same thing happened to ours the other day. if the float is moving freely, then this is what needs replacing.

A week ago I knew nothing about toilets. Was about £6 for the part, took me about 30 seconds to fit it!

I initially bought the wrong bit! Or at least the inlet was at the bottom and my cistern is set up to be fed through the side, that was a silly moment but otherwise it took me about 5 minutes to sort out. Can't believe how easy it was to fix.

I was so put off by it as I immediately thought it was going to be tricky and beyond my ability but its literally just tightening a few connections. All I needed was a spanner/wrench to tighten the inlet, easy!

Thanks for the advice. My toilet is now flushing like it should, my new valve is a LOT slower than my last one but its also silent so its pretty good. Quite happy with myself!

Cheers guys!
