Down under mate!
Hi gents,

Jetting off to Tokyo next month for Star Wars celebration, will also spend a couple of days at Disney Tokyo. We're going for 10 days.

Any suggestions for day trips out of the city, and interesting things to do in and around the city. :)

Don’t do the Mario Kart…it’s such a tourist trap and all the locals hate it. Seriously, it’s not a race but a poodle around the city in traffic, it’s an annoyance to everyone else. I feel a sense of shame when I see people driving round in them.

Day trips…

Yokohama - China Town, Cup Noodle Museum, Ramen museum
Enoshima
Kamakura
Hakone (not NOT on the weekend)
Lake Kawaguchi / Mt Fuji

Things to do in Tokyo

Odiba - Team Labs/Gundham
Akihabara
Ikebukuro / Sunshine City
Asakusa/Sensoji
Skytree/Tokyo Tower
Meji Shrine

Went to team labs planets earlier in the week and I would honestly say give it a miss.

Absolutely rammed, people shouting/talking loudly everywhere, children running around and generally just being rude. It was a huge disappointment.

Oh dear! (Glad I went when it first opened!)

I really enjoyed it…this was 2019.

It's a real shame because it was highly recommended to us by people who also visited very early on.

I'm not usually one to write negative reviews, but it seemed like people were treating it as a public play area for their kids. It more or less felt like an end to end queue the whole way around with how tightly people were packed in.

Re Mario Kart, Of course it’s a tourist trap but it’s amazing fun. And; whereas can you do it?
Not one of my highlights, but it was terrific fun, a unique way to see the city and I’d recommend it to anyone!

Many thanks will start doing some research on these suggestions. :)

Where's the best place to stay in Tokyo? I am currently looking at staying in Akasaka as I've been told it's got the best links to Tokyo as a whole. I'll be there from the 6th April for 9 days. Flying staff travel though so everything is very last minute.

So...this is the BASIC of the Tokyo subway.

Look at it like this.

Slice the map like a clock. Think about where you want to visit most and stay on that side. The way I do it is....

If you like Anime stuff, Fish market, Ginza shopping, The Imerial Garden, easy access to the airport. I would stay on the right side, between Shambashi at 04:00 up to Uneo at 02:00.

Note - Tokyo Station is where all the Shinkansen start and finishes. Whether you go up north to Sendai, it starts there, or whether you go to Osaka, it starts there. If it goes to Osaka, it will start there and it will make a stop in Shinagawa before leaving the city.

If you like more skyscrapers, more modern, then stay on the West side, I would go from as low as Meguro at about 07:00 up to Ikebukuto at 10:00.

I would AVOID staying at places NOT on the green line- Yamanote line, the reason being that almost everything you want to see and do, is on this line, making it convenient. Do not AT ALL, stay at the Hilton in Odiba. That is about 45 min 1 way from Shinjuku, about 1hr+ door to door. You will be spending 2hrs on that train daily if you stay in Odiba.

I would avoid staying between 7pm to 4pm below and 10:00 to 02:00. South side of the city are very business district, not much to do there, Shimbashi is cool because it is next to Ginza, walkable distance and it is full of bars where the salary men go drinking at night.

If you stay on Shinjuku then it is an easy way to get across to the east side. Otherwise it is easy just to stay on the Yamanote line and do the loop.

I have stayed in Ikebukuro twice, it's like a mini Shinjuku, prices slightly lower, but only like 10mins from Shinjuku on the train.

BTW, Ginza right next to Shimbashi and Yurakucho, it has its own line call the Ginza line.

Asakusa is okay, it is where the SEnsoji temple is, but you will need to change train basically every day because it is not on the Yamanote line. It is the reason why I stayed at Ikebukuro and Shimbashi. Also, the airport Monorail will stop first at Hamatsucho, and then you change to the Yamanote line if you land at Haneda. If you land in Narita then the Airport express will take you to Tokyo Station.

Most tourists will not stop at the stations between 11:00 to 2am and 04:00 to 08:00. They concentrate at the narrow band on either side.

That is super useful, thanks @Raymond Lin
Will be travelling with a 5 and 8 year old who are generally anime and Sanrio obsessed, plus the wife who wants to just take it all in. Will take a look at your suggestions. Will be going to Universal for 2/3 days too. I wanted to squeeze Kyoto in too but don't think we'll have time.

I would in that case, stay near Tokyo Station.

Tokyo Station (basement) has a row of shops full of merch, Ghibli etc. And you can cross over to Shibuya PARCO (a department store) which has the Nintendo Store and Pokemon store. Sunshine City in Ikebukuro has the original Pokemone Center.

If you stay near Tokyo Station then you can just get on the Shinkansen direct to Kyoto/Osaka, if you stay elsewhere then you will need to drag your luggage on local trains first. But make use of the next day delivery for luggage, ask the concierge about this, just pack an overnight bag.

Ikebukuro also have an anime district, like Akihabara but smaller. Nakano Broadway also have lots of Anime merch shops too, its basically a long indoor mall in 3 floors.

No immediate plans but... infinitely more intent to check Tokyo out one day than most other places. Will keep bits of this in mind and might come looking for you one day for tips ;) :D

If you're going to look at Yokohama then I'd recommend the gundam museum it's got a full size moving gundam which is about 4 stories tall and very cool.

They dismantled that last year, it's being moved to Osaka for the Expo this year.

The only one around at the moment is the one in Odiba and Fukuoka.
