Got a trip to Disney booked for later in the year, a friend of mine has advised getting a tag for the tolls rather than paying at the kiosk as it's much faster and more convenient.

I've had a look around and seems to be a couple of companies

Bip&go
Ulys
Emovis

Are they worth it?

Also is there one that's better than the others?

I can only speak for motorcycles but in my current trip mine - which I mounted on my bike screen, facing the right way - worked about 2/3rds of the time. In Italy even worse odds. I'm sure i was positioning the bike wrong or it was all a dream. On my way back up now and have decided I'll just stop and get a ticket each time instead. Less hassle.

This is Bip & Go. As I say, motorcycle. I'm sure it works better in cars.

Thankyou

I've read the same elsewhere .

I was ering on the side of not bothering as I think we've only got the 1 toll to go through

I use Emovis (https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk), have been using them since 2012 without issue. Keep in mind with these companies you normally have to pay an annual fee (~£8) + a refundable deposit for the tag itself (~£17) + a usage fee (~£4) for the months you use them (I think it's up to a max of 2 months). They last around 2 years and the battery isn't replaceable.

If you frequent France and the tolls they are definitely worth it, saves a bit of time and just drive through the toll booth at the indicated speed. You then get billed at the end of the month.

If you've got very few tolls to do and a passenger to assist in paying for the toll as they'll be designed for the left hand car driver then getting a toll tag probably isn't worth it. Fairly sure nowadays it's just collect toll ticket, pay at the other end with a contactless card.

Thanks that's how I remember the tolls when I was younger travelling to Spain with my parents.

As it's just the one trip it's probably not worth it.

To follow this up, riding from Ancona to the tunnel last weekend I had better luck. Or rather instead of preempting failure and riding close to the ticket machine thing, I kept the bike bang in the middle of the lane. This resulted in success for I think 7 out of 8. And the 1 failure was leaving a toll road on France somewhere where I hit help, a lady said "bonjour?" to which I blurted out something like "ah bonjour, Telepass, tag, bip&go..." which resulted in "ah au revoir" and the barrier opening.

Much less stressful than on the way down. And amazingly I've been correctly classed as Cat 5 for at least the last week's trips.

It's not worth it if you're not traveling there regularly - even for 1 trip a year I found it a waste of time. Just pay with a contactless card. There are rarely meaningful queues in my experience so just not worth the cost/hassle.

I beg to differ, we go there a lot and it just makes life a lot easier. It isn't a hassle - once it's set up it's fire and forget.

I use the Emovis tags. Not had one transaction failure and the battery lasts about 5 years. When it does need replacing, it's only P&P for a replacement.

It is great tbh. Takes all the stress out of tolls on a family holiday and generates extreme smugness as you cruise past people queuing in the cash lanes fumbling for their wallets.

Something else to mention is that if you're travelling in a rhd car with a passenger who's asleep, you don't have to wake them up to pay, or if they wake up when a car stops like some people, it doesn't matter as you don't have to stop.

Meh, done 1000s of miles through Europe and have always used contactless payment.

I just cant see how it's that much of an inconvenience as a non resident.

That reminds me, the battery has gone in mine and I really need to get around to swapping it out!

I drive to Chamonix most years and the Emovis tags are great, especially in a right hand drive car. Nothing like cruising down the non stop lane at the toll booth looking at the suckers queuing in the other lanes.
