I love the movie and game adaptations, i.e.

The Hunt For Red October (1990)
Patriot Games (1992)
Clear And Present Danger (1994)
The Sum Of All Fears (2002)
Also just noticed on IMDB, Jack Ryan (2013), which appears to be a reboot starring Chris Pine

I have never however read any of his novels. I'm not particularly a book reader at the best of times and can only claim to have read Andy McNab's Bravo Two Zero which is of a military theme.

Can anyone suggest some of the better Clancy novels with a brief synopsis and if I should read them in any particular order? Does some of the political back story ever outweigh the military themed sequences? It seems the movies have a strong political undercurrent so I imagine this is also the foundation of the novels?

Thanks in advance :)

Just read a quick review on Rainbow Six, whicg features Clark (Sum of all fears) and Chavez (r6 games), cool Im sold :D

Pass, I only have one other book which is: Debt of Honor (ugh spelling :p) which I enjoyed but it took me 2 goes to read it as it does go a little political in the middle.

It's part of the ongoing series of Jack Ryan books though so would be best to start those in order perhaps?

Rainbow Six features characters you'll be familiar with without too much government in fighting :p

Rainbow six is a great book and definitely worth a read of you're into the likes of McNab, Ryan, etc

Rainbow six is one of the better books :)

Jack Ryan is (from memory) in all the original books (IE not op center etc), apart from "Without remorse".

I have read them all lol.
If you going down the Jack Ryan series, personally i would read them all in order. as you get better character progression.
They early ones are the best imo, upto and including Rainbow 6, the rest after are a bit meh imo.
One that is one of my favs and is kind of a standalone is Without Remorse, its like the film Taken on steroids, lol

tried one of the op-centre books, it was not good imo, and not even written by him.

edit. why did i quote myself? missed the edit button :o

there can be a strong political theme in some, and can be a bit heavy at the start, but trust me, they tend to get better as you progress through the book.

If your not a big book reader, it's worth trying an audio book.
Drive a car, walk to work or whatever you can listen to them, it's brilliant and I know get through far more than when I just read. It's got a bad image, but it's worth a try.

Be warned after reading the novels, you might want to vomit when you re-watch the films.

aside from hunt for red october they are the worst novel to film conversions i have seen.

hunt for red october is a classic film not only for the technology developed for the submarine portion. but it is a shame that after the success of HFRO, movie bosses decide to have more input on the film that followed.

Especially Clear And Present Danger, on its own it is not too bad a movie however I'd already read the book which has so much more to it!
