Ok, been asked to get this Tomtom to work on a mates laptop.

I have failed completely.

Plugging in and unplugging it does give me the USB in/out sound, but nothjing appears in teh device manager, even hidden devices.

Ok, so bugger it, I will try my laptop and its doing the same, and so I have been sat at my desktop and thats also doing the same thing with my own TomTom???

I have looked at solutions and they say to uninstall the driver , but the only thing that shows up for me, is :-

Unknown USB Device ( Devioce Descriptor Request failed )

Dont get these issues with anything else, just Win 10

I have even tried forcing various drivers, I have uninstalled e3verything and retried, but I am still getting nothing even remotely different to this.

Anyone know a solution or am I just going insane for nothing?

You need to do a manual install of the USB Storage or MTP driver. Go to device manager, find the unknown (or marked with a yellow exclamation mark) device, install new driver, choose driver, choose Mass USB storage or MTP device. Then it should show up to the system.

It's a known Windows bug that's been reported (literally for years), where the USB device install fails for some devices that get plugged in, and you have to manually tell it what driver to use.

I regularly get this on a Garmin, so maybe satnavs are particularly prone to this dumbness.

Ah, it could be the same issue I got with my mobile phones???

I plug in the Windows phone and it wont use it, I reinstall the very same MTP Driver thats already in, and it works ,but the Android wont... To fix that I then do exactly the same thing to the Android as I did wwith the Windows phone and viola... and so on.

ill try that then.

Ok, done a couple but USB MASS STORAGE is NOT listed in the devices drivers I can chuck in.

Where can I find it?

No, its not done it.
anything else I can try?

Try the other devices that come up. I just checked with my Garmin, (it loaded the correct drivers by itself for a change), and I have the choice of MPT Device, MTP USB Device, and USB Mass Storage Device. One of those should work for you unless the TomTom is very different.

I have gone through the entire list of devices including trying to look in C:\Windows\INF and USB Mass storage device is the ONLY one I found and that did not help.

The MTP devices does NOT show up, and yet it does when I have to fix the windows or android phone???

Im genuinely peed off with this.

Just a random question because it's not 100% clear if you have or haven't done this....

Have you tried what tomtom suggest?

Personally on the (now very rare) occasion I've had issues with drivers I've usually tried to extract the drivers and then install them outside of the installer. Sometimes it's already done if you check online too.

Of course.

and yes, I am trying to extract the drivers, but from what? From where?
I have tried downloading the drivers, and again, Im getting nowhere?

Im dumb I know, but why is this not a single issue for me with the mobile phones and yet on this tomtom its a pain in the bum?

Why does the MTP Drivers show up perfectly when I redo the phones but never with the TomTom?
