Is TomTom available on Android or is there a better alternative?

I'm thinking of getting an android phone and want a GPS app that I can enter a place i'm looking for and will give me real time updates of where I need to go step by step both on foot and tranport for when im in other cities.

I doubt they're hugely interested in doing it as they'd charge likely the same £50 they do for the iOS app which most Android users won't be interested in, especially given the essentially built in functionality of Google Navigation which is more than adequate for most peoples needs.

having used a TomTom in a rental car last year, and buying the Galaxy S2 now, I cannot see what the fuss is about. The navigation app on the galaxy offers the same functionality, even has traffic, voice guided what more could you want?

didn't use it a lot, because i dont have my own car in the uk, but having used it when I was driven by my cousin and uncle, in town and in the highway, never notice it stop due to low signal, so yeah, maybe something to do with the cache thing.

aslong as you don't stray off the route then you don't need the internet - but if you want a different route that's out side the cache area then you need the net.

10 square miles is the limit though isn't it?

Think you can have multiple cache "blocks" of 10 miles but the route will always be cached when you first put it into the phone to solve along with detours and possible small changes. It's not bulletproof by any stretch of the imagination but it's better than before.

I agree its a decent free solution - but give me local sd stored maps anyday for peace of mind.

I've got Nav-Free on my Arc (and Waze but that's on-line like Google maps/Nav), its pretty good and has the UK/Ireland maps stored on my SD card, its like a basic Tomtom... gets me from A to B without faffing around somewhere near Z like Google has on occasion!...

there is a Pay version too called Nav-Mii (I think) :)

I use CoPilot never had a problem with it works as it should, plus it has free Safty Camera feature that pretty much spot on and is updated quite often.

google nav is internet based so can be a pain in low signal areas

i was googling last nite for phone based ones and stumbled across one that let you cache your own areas

its java based and seems a bit basic but its free and they have a guide on how to download your own map sections via googlemaps so it doesnt require any internet connection

i dont think it tells you where to go but unless your a tard you can surely read a ,map and travel from point a to point b :P

Add my 2P
I have used Tom Tom on my last two phones and it is very good and I wanted it on my Android phone and could not get it so bought Co Pilot instead and to be honest I was blown away with just how user friendly it is

I am a Lorry driver and use it every day and it works like a champ
Like all sat navs you must have the 100% correct address or postcode but I really cannot fault it
cannot honestly see me using anything else ever again

i just tried "navfree" seems awesome and you just select which country maps you want to download.

the UK map pack is around 200mbish and then theres a post code addon aswell, all free! comes with a female and a male voice! does not need to download maps on the fly so 0 internet usage!
