Sheesh, I can't cope with these games. Just too many controls and buttons....how do you all cope?

I still play Quake III a lot, but managed to write a scrpit that allowed me to 'toggle' all my Weapons on my MX510 one way or another.

Played Wow for a year and managed to get away with using the Mouse cursor a screen icons for everything.

Installed BF2, not only am I finding the comms and minimap hard to follow, but the controls!!! There are so many controls that need to be binded.

I just have a a problem using my left hand for much more than directions, so, it just looks like I'm gonna have to start missing out on more and more of these complex games. Short stubby fingers and an impared brain :(

How do you all cope? Or do you actually have problems for some time before you get used to it.

takes awhile to get used to it, but for comms once u remember the buttons u have to press and what order, like with css X then 1 to say Go go go, it becomes 2nd nature.

for bf2 though its best to play with a mic when you can. esp on good friendly servers

Nah, ive been playing CSS for ages and still never got used to those rather pointless comms presets.

I have issues cos I use my arrow keys which makes it worse. Don't get me started on BF2s control mapping system!!!!!  .

I do a similar thing to you and do a lot on my mouse, I couldn't play with less mouse buttons, hence the MX700 instead of the newer "gaming" ones with only 1 thumb button.

What is it you are having trouble with exactly, you don't need half the controls tbh but you could get one of those silly keyboards with a template over the top that tells you what the buttons do.

Make sure you choose your keys wisely.

I know a lot of people use WASD for movement, but this really limits your options, as it makes keys like 9, 0, O, P, L etc really hard to use, in fact anything right of H is quite a stretch.

Personally I use TFGH as this is much more central and gives you access to more keys without moving your hand.

LOL. Im sure it wasnt a personal attack on you :D

I tend to have troubles with games that use too many controls too so your not alone. And like iamgud I use the arrows keys which limits how many surrounding buttons you have to remap.
But after playing a game or 2 of what ever it I am playing, its usually only a matter of mapping the essentials close to the arrow keys and on the 7 mouse buttons.

The game that took me the longest to get to grips with control wise was Tribes 2, it had my head well pickled for weeks until I got the grasp of it.

I keep mashing the Windows key when i try to hit Ctrl :o

Gives me the ****s that does :p

Some stuff that helps -

Logitech G15 keyboard: 18 on the fly macro recording buttons.

Nostromo N52: Macroing on hand sized device.

Ergodex DX1: Make your own keyboard.

I'm like that with all the latest games that have more than the basic FPS controls. 'How many controls!?!'. If its a good game, they eventually become second nature, but initially its quite overwhelming.

I am rather irked by BF2's (and BF2142's) comm system though. While you're saying 'Spotted... Tank', you can't aim anywhere or shoot. I'd rather have a quick 2-3 key combo so I can still fire if someone jumps out. It would be quicker too, since pressing the right button, then carefully selecting the object isn't exactly fast.

That's due to the fact it logs it on the minimap. When I used to be a gunner in a gunship, with my mate on teamspeak, I'd listen out for people reporting tanks. When I heard "enemy armour spotted!", I'd tell the pilot where it was, we fly high and a TV guided missile finds its way there.

Ah no you've got the wrong end of the stick :) I love the idea of spotting specific targets, I just dislike how its done. I'd rather have a combo like:

1. Medic!
2. Spotted
1. Tank
2. APC
3. Helicopter
4. Big freakin' bear
3. Need Backup

So to spot a helicopter you just press 1, then 3 in quick succession. That way you can carry on moving and fighting while using radio messages. Just like CS :)

There really arent that many controls in BF2....and anyway, once you get used to a game, its fine, you just need to be quick and have good reflexes.

That's what I thought. All I did in BF2 was swap a few key around, crounch prone ect and use the arrow keys to control the picth of aircraft.

Yeah they have a simular thing in ET where you push 'c then followed by 1 for medic etc" was a lot better than the bf2 way of spotting..

One good thing about bf2 spotting tho and i dont really see a lot of people do it, is that fact that if you dont have uav you can just do random spots infront of you and it picks up any enemies for you :)

You know that TFGH is quite good, only problem is i would hit that damn windows key thinkin its Crtl tho :( (maybe i can take it out) because its true if you use 'tfgh' then there are a lot more buttons around your fingers, Dunno if thats a good thing for someone that finds it hard to remember all the keys tho :p

I've used arrow keys, tfgh and wasd set ups, and I have to say I prefer wasd, fo te simple reason that without looking I can reference point my little finger on shft and know straight away where the rest of my hand is. When I tried tfgh, I was constantly stretching to reach a number slot (usully 1), and finding that the rest of may hand had moved from where it should be. I then wasted valuable time relocating the right place on the keyboard.

Train yourself to get away from arrow keys, as you really do restrict yourself with options. It's hard work for the first week or so, but after that you get used to it and it will make you play better.
