At the moment I am going to the gym mon - fri and doing a combination of weights, cardio and swimming

I am eating 6 times a day but smaller portions than normal. This week I have got through a tray of 30 eggs in 6 days.

Is it bad to have too many eggs? Reading about it it sounds like the yolks are high in cholesterol / saturated fat, but then I suppose i'm also burning this off every day

Theres so much conflicting health information out there, with several conflicting studies as to whether eggs raise cholesterol or not. 30 in six days does sound a tad excessive - put another way at that rate you'd be eating 1800 eggs a year!

I'm currently training but I keep my egg consumption to 3 every other day, not including the occasional one used in cooking elsewhere. You could always replace the protein with other sources such as tinned fish or lean meats.

I would love to replace the eggs with fish and lean meats...however I'm poor and eggs are cheap (plus I love the taste of them)

Is there any fish / other high protein food that's as cheap as eggs?

Isn't stuff like whey protein (and the thousands of other pills and potions) bad for you?

I'm not really a believer in protein/vitamin substitutes - food should be, well food

Powdered whey is basically the proteins in milk extracted and dried, however there are a lot of **** products out there full of chemicals - the only one Id use is this one : http://www.dolphinfitness.co.uk/en/reflex-natural-whey/1187/?o=chocolate&ladid=uk

Its whey and natural flavouring, no sugar or sweetners. Add it to a smoothie or something and it just pushes up the protein - it works out at 43p per serving.

Tinned fish in my mind is fairly cheap too - tin of sardines, with a little work to make them palatable, can be around 60p a serving.

If you can balance it right legumes/beans, especially dried, can be a good source of protein and probably the cheapest, but come with a high level of carbohydrate, so you need to watch that if trying to cut

Isn't stuff like whey protein bad for you?

No. It can be amazing for getting more protein in your diet if you have a lifestyle that doesn't allow for other sources such as preparing meat and fish like you say.

Thanks, and thank jizzyjames(?)

Does the unflavored stuff taste ok? I have seen the reflex whey before but not the impact

Are they basically the same in a different container?

Best with semi skimmed milk or water? I can get free milk from work

With water, I find it tastes like plastic if you have it with anything other than cold water lol, or you can just hold your breath while you drink it. With cold water it tastes plain. I sometimes put a couple of tsps of chocolate powder in it so that it tastes nice.

If you pick a chocolate flavour (8% less protein by weight), I calculated you're actually losing about 40% more protein in terms of money because you have to pay more for the chocolate ones.

I don't have it with milk because apparently it slows the absorption of the protein.

No idea about the reflex whey.

Yeh, the chocolate one is £12 more! do you just use cheap chocolate powder

Suppose that way you can add anything you want too if you get bored with chocolate

This is the stuff I use: http://www.myprotein.com/uk/products/impact_whey_protein
I use the unflavoured one. Buy the 5kg one and it comes to about 20p a serving.

I currently use MyProtein Impact Whey Isolate which is pretty much the same except this product has slightly more protein and less other stuff with a higher cost. But it is currently on a buy one get one half price offer until tomorrow..

On a side note nuts are supposed to be a great source of protein.

Went into town and had a look in a sports fitness shop, looked at whey and stuff but somehow ended up coming out woth a tshirt and a chocolate protein flapjack bar instead! Also stopped at supermarket to get half a chicken...

Ended up spending £20, i did get chocolate nesquick, just had 2 tablespoons in a pint of milk. Its one of the best things ive tasted!

(ultimate fail on my shopping though)

I buy 30 eggs a week off the local farm. 20 of those are breakfast on the weekdays, raw (because I like to smash my protein down and bosh some weights out quickly)
The rest are used in cooking, baking etc.

They're a fantastic source of protein, and cheaper than the powder.
You could also have tinned tuna in water, great source of protein and dirt cheap.
