Thought i'd ask before i started...

I'm currently jogging every night for an hour and was thinking about going swimming three mornings a week before work to aid my weight loss/fitness levels. Is this too much? I don't ache or have any other side effects of jogging every night so i wanted to push myself a little more.

Thanks

lol! :D

Well I guess if count sports like rugby or basketball then yeah I love running too - however, I have no enjoyment in running in the street/woods etc.

sounds good, early morning swims really wake me up before work.

just do 20-25 minutes swim in the morning, you'll know if your overdoing it as you'll start to feel crap

swimming works all the muscles so you'll get a good workout in 30 mins of swimming laps, especially if going 3-4 times a week. just make sure your getting enough sleep the night before if your up early

Do you jog for an hour every single day? If you do, as chong warrior says, its going to be a bit hard on the joints.

Every day yes, but the jogging isn't continual - I'm not that fit. It's a mix of jogging and fast walking. If i start with the swimming then perhaps that'll be my main method of exercise, with jogging thrown in every now and then for good measure.

I definately think jogging every single day is a bad idea simply because of the impact you'll sustain and its effect on your joints.

mixing up jogging one day and swimming the next might be kinder on your joints , and depending on how much weight you have now, swimming might be easier. When you're heavier than you should be swimming supports the weight making it easier to workout and get longer periods of excercise done. Also being heavier puts even more pressure on your joints so often swimming is great because it can help you lose weight with less risk of injury, and injury's are crap when you're trying to lose weight as if you can't excercise it becomes way easier to fall back into bad habbits.

AS for shorter swimming workouts. its a catch 22, yes you're working more muscles, or more resistance on the muscles atleast as your arms are pushing against water rather than air, so it can seem much more tiring, but mostly as your arms won't have the same endurance your legs have if you've mostly been running ;) Because of the water supporting your weight well, holding up your weight while running takes up a lot of energy so its not quite the same.

Swimming is great anyway, easy, very low impact/injury risk which is great for losing weight as i said. just need to get yourself a waterproof ipod :p

all i do is about 2 miles a day, 3 days a week, keeps me fit ;), depends what reason your getting fit for.

EDIT: sorry i havnt read all posts so someone might have already asked

Right, i'm gonna space out the jogging then and get me some decent trainers. I'm just really enjoying losing the weight at the moment and have become addicted - just got back from a late night run after not being able to get out til late. I will alternate swimming - i've just got to get myself up early in the morning to do it before work - and i'm TERRIBLE in the mornings.

Well, a good start. Went down the local sports centre to have a nose round at 6.30!...i'm just rather pleased that i made it first time, i'm crap in the morning.

Will be doing Mon, Wed, Fri mornings down the pool for 30mins or so. Not too busy then either. Go me!;)

I don't think anyone does straight off the bat, no-one normal anyway. Do it enough and that changes though :)

I guess. I do love running around a squash court constantly for an hour, or playing an hour of basket ball - really knackers me and I love it. I guess it's just an effort to push yourself to do it out on the road so to speak. I need some better trainers though and stick to parks and woodland. I'll have to put more effort in when it comes to cutting a bit before summer.
