Tooth abcess!

My dad has had root canal surgery without anaesthetic, as he doesn't like anaesthetics. Clearly he's a lot harder than he looks. He has occasionally stopped the dentist mid-job and asked for some anaesthetic, but generally he does without.

Madness, to be honest.

I did the same. No anesthetic, no injections.

Talk about hitting my pain threshold

Went through the whole thing without the dentist stopping though.

I've never felt pain like it.

Styled it out though because there was a lady present.

yeah my wisdom tooth has abcessed a few times

decided to change my mouth wash to antibacterial listerine havent had an abcess since

Funnily enough the dentist rang me back after posting in this thread.

Apparently the xray shows my wisdom tooth probably doesn't have enough room to come through so will probably become infected again and have to come out. They said they are going to leave it now but if it become infected again it will come out.

I don't want more teeth out :(

Is it likely to hurt having a wisdom tooth hurt? I had some others removed when I was younger and dont think that was too bad. Remember the horrible feeling of them wrenching the last ones out with all their might.

:( he didn't touch it again said there still waiting on the surgery which was meant to be march as urgent but now they think it will be may. And that's urgent he said others are waiting a year. Thats been 4 months so far.

I was hoping he would just pop it and drain it and give me antibiotics but decided it was worth just trying these stronger ones so I am on metronidazole. He claims will get rid of it.
I really dont trust dentists that speak about 4 English sentences but what can you do when the poles invade :P

I was on metronidazole also. Don't think I quite finished the prescription but the swelling went after 2 days.

Keep forgetting to use the antibac mouth wash!

Metronidazole's the stuff, sure enough.

Some of the "advice" being given in this thread is exactly why medical threads are banned on OcUK. Septicemia isn't pleasant, guys.

If you have pain during any dental work then you should ask your dentist to give you another shot. You should not be in pain under any circumstances, that's what anesthesia is there for.

Same, i've had a good dentist all my life (Harley st) and over that time i've had a wisdom tooth out, 8+ fillings and root canal twice and i've never had even the sightest amount of pain.

One or two injections and it's all good.

I got a horrible abcess when I was on holiday in France once... I can remember there being a really weird taste whenever I tried to suck anything (LIKE A STRAW FOR A DRINK), or pushed certain teeth with my tongue. ANyway, got back to UK, drank massive cups of antibiotics for a couple of weeks, had some anaesthetic pasted in, tooth out, small pain, done.

I'm glad it was only a milk tooth though!

I'll need mine out too. I will be asking to be knocked out. Thats the best way. The last one I got out did hurt for a few days but it's nothing to worry about.

Well I got my wisdoms taken out yesterday and it the pain today is pretty bad. what's worse is a severe lack of food. I have stocked up on mash potato and soups.
Anyone got any other liquid type foods to eat im thinking of grabbing some of those slimfast shakes and making them with whole milk to add some variety. Wonder if I can eat spaghetti or beans without chewing.

About a week of no decent food will be worse than the surgery :p

Dont get slimfast shakes, your chemist should do some for people who can't chew or stomach solid foods, probably a shedload cheaper too.

I had a wisdom out yesterday, dentist injected local into both sides, makde me wait 10 mins, then started to pull it out, quickly relised it wasnt coming out as easy as it should, so pulled abit harder. Thing came out after a few more tries, but when he looks at it he was pretty stunned, as the roots hadnt combined fully yet, so that caused me quite abit of pain
