I've just dug out an old intel pentium d and applied toothpaste as thermal and I'm getting readings of 26c. How good is that?

regardless of short term results the toothpaste will dry, shrink adn break downa over time... almost any substance you can manage to squeeze under a heatsink should work to some degree for a time...

p4d at 26 degrees.. are testing it outside in antartica?

I'm using AquaFresh. Now I've seen it works Ok I'm gonna use it on my new CPU until I can pick up some ArcticSilver.

26C is lower than ambient temps here today!

I certainly wouldn't try it on a new processor, unless you want it to fail when the paste has dried up (fairly quickly!)
