Top 10 engines, EVER

but they don't have variable cam timing and soon honda will have constantly variation of lift and duration instead of just 2 definite profiles

Hondas engine has been evolved, Toyota stopped evolution as they're too focussed on hybrid/fuel economy, and have removed the performance segment of their product lineup.

The technologies may be subtley different, but they produce similar power, using a similar ethos.

In fact, the 1.8l in my celica produces more power/l than the UK CTR.

Do you think Cavaliers were pig ugly? I think the Cavalier GSi is one of the best looking cars Vauxhall have ever produced (okay you could argue that isn't saying much) :)

ok so the calibra was ok, in a kind of gay knightrider sort of way but vauxhalls in general i find astheticaly challanged*

(my personal view, therefore right :) )

:D

I forgot about the Calibra XE's, yeah they are good looking too. The Cavalier also is (IMO) miles better looking than its direct-competitor, the mk.1 Ford Mondeo.

IIRC the 3 door was launched at fifty quid short of £16k.

it really was THE performance bargain of the decade.
Indeed :) I had a ride (not drive) in one once and it was very, very quick

I think you're talking with the benefit of hindsight there.
the Calibra was a very brave and " mould breaking " design for Vauxhall back in 89/90.
sure NOW they carry a naff image and compared to newer designs they look dated, but I still think it was a brave move by Vauxhall back in the day.

My father once borrowed a Sierra Saphire Cosworth from a wealthy friend who bought one from new.

I sat in the back and when he booted it I actually cried to get him to stop.

Up untill that day the fastest thing I'd ever been in was a 2.0 Ford Capri.

Aye, unfortunately the thieves liked them just as much and insurance went through the roof
you're not wrong.
the car so good the Police couldn't beat 'em so they joined 'em.the forces with the highest car crime stats had to buy Cossies..NE england, Humberside etc.

when insurance went nuts the resale values plummeted, then when car crime and insurance started to drop the residuals started to climb again.
one of the few times I've seem used cars appreciate .

heh, they did the same with imprezas (cornwall started i think) when their were a spate of ram raids, they used imprezas as getaway cars. Often outran the police and their helis :D

Not long after the police bought some subarus.

many of the current Ford lineup aren't within everymans budget either so what's your point?
for example how much is a brand new top of the line Mondeo today?
approaching £30k IIRC and that's not within everymans budget by a long chalk.
to say it's Ford money doesn't imply that everyone with a license can afford one.
what it means is that it brought Ferrari performance to people who previously couldn't have dreamt about affording a vehicle as potent.
it brought that level of power in at such a relatively low price that there was every chance you would find someone in your street with one, compared to rarely seeing a Ferrari.

Mate I think we are going to have to agree to disagree here because as good as the Cossies where never "Ford Money" they where bloody expensive.

i'll part agree, part disagree with you.
at £27k, the last of the Sapphires were definitely expensive.
the 3 door at launch however was, at under £16k, a bargain cosidering the performance it offered.it was priced under ALL it's competition.

if you read the rally results of it's day almost every 6R4 failure was marked as cam failure.
IIRC didn't they reduce the capacity to 2.5 litres and for some reason whatever was included as part of the work seems to have cured the cam problem.
as for the XJ220 the 6R4 lump caused a little controversy to say the least...not to mention a court case or two.
True, they reduced the capacity, it was so the car could enter that specific class. I think the maximum was 2.5 litres, hence the reduction in capacity.

isn't the K series Rover seriously prone to head gasket failure?
Not necessarilyl True they had a fair few go but it's nothing the new triple thickness gasket wouldn't fix, this is true for the KV6 as well.

I would've thought the Cavalier's direct competitor was the Ford Sierra, as the Cav only saw a couple of years of Mondeo production.

Indeed, I remember a story where a police force had bought a few Cossies but the drivers of them didn't realise quite how powerful they were and promptly put them in various hedges! :D

From 88-93 it was the Sierra then from 93-95 the Mondeo, fair enough :p (for the Mk.3 Cav)

Engine

* 1499,8 ccm
* max 1.500 bhp at 11.000 rpm
* turbo: KKK (Germany), later Garrett (USA)
* block: cast steel (production based)
* fuel: synthetic from Wintershall (Germany)
* leasing: DM 153.000 per unit

What about the Beemer engine from circa 1980-87? 1.5 litre, over a 1000 bhp and the cast iron blocks were said to be urinated on by the engineers as they stood out side the back of the engineering shop to help "weather them in"!

The triple-layered gasket was for the T series only.
