Top 10 Gerrard Goals

Gerrard or John Terry should be England captain and I just hope McClaren has the guts to strip that big girls blouse that is David Beckham of the captaincy after the world cup as Sven sure hasnt
I couldn't agree more. I don't see what Beckham has to offer as a captain anymore. IMO, he doesn't have the drive or determination that's needed to inspire players when things aren't going according to plan. Both Terry and Gerrard have these traits in abundance and either would make an excellent captain. Having said that, wasn't there talk about the England sponsors refusing to sign a contract with the FA until they knew if Beckham would be kept on as captain after the world cup? Maybe McLaren will have his hands tied and Beckham will be kept on.

And the FA cup and all the games leading to the final ;) . No the liverpool team is very good, but Steve G always turns it on when its needed.

Come on, let's be honest, if Liverpool didn't have Gerrard they'd struggle to make the top 4 in the league. As an Evertonian I hate to admit it, but he's a fantastic footballer who is the key to the Liverpool team. Without him they're far less a team.

I'd still prefer Terry as England captain though.

The thing with England is we have potential captains all over the pitch:
Robinson
Neville
Ferdinand
Terry
Beckham
Gerrard
Rooney

All inspirational players capable of being captain. Of that list I would say Beckham is the weakest.

I could understand the reasoning behind giving becks the captaincy at the time, he was the best player, most high profile. But at the moment were not getting any extra from him by his being captain.

Personally I feel that Gerrard should get the captaincy. Terry is a leader no doubt, but i dont think he needs to be captain to lead from the back. He is vocal and lets everyone know whats going on. Gerrard isnt as vocal but leads through performance. Making Gerrard captain would in my opinion really spur him on and be most beneficial for england.

I would say Robinson is the weakest out of that bunch. I've been team captain as a keeper before, and it's bordering on impossible to inspire your team mates when you're between the sticks. The best captains have traditionally been centre backs or centre mids as they can speak to everyone on the pitch without leaving their position too much.

I do agree to a point, however, Schmeichel was as good a captain as I've seen. Robinson can inspire just through his ability.

Ability to injure his teamates more like! "Oi Owen, score a goal or im gonna put you out of the rest of the tournament!" :) Seriously I dont think Robinson has a chance for England captaincy as long as Stevie or Terry are about.

Disagree there mate. Gerrard is a key player for Liverpool but without him we would still beat the teams outside the top four quite easily. As we proved against your lot in the last derby. With ten men :)

IMO his consisitency is what has won him the player of the year and is the main distinguishing feature over Lampard. Like i said earlier, I can understand why you would go for Henry or Ronny as best player in the world cos they have the flair, but for product, Gerrard must be the most influential player in the world. His influence (for liverpool at least) can never be underestimated. Just ask AC Milan or West Ham

Beckham is the only player who plays for a foreign team though. In my opinion that experience is a fairly good reason for him to be captain of an international side.

I don't think any other of the england provisional 25 have played for a non-english team have they? I could be wrong.

Indeed going on that Owen Hargreaves would be a perfectly good captain
