Hey guys,

in the market for another 120hz monitor.

I've had the BenQ XL2410T and I didn't like it.

I am considering the Asus VG236HE
Anyone got any experience with this? E.G. What's the gloss like? noticeably bad or anything?

Don't really know of many other 120hz monitors but if there are any other decent ones please suggest :D

ive got the Alienware aw2310 120hz and i like it, check some reviews. costs a bit more than most @ ~£350 on discount (£400+ normaly)
im waiting on an RMA replacement for mine though as a pixel has blown up :o Dell did send one out the next day but the delivery driver dropped it from chest hight while unpacking it on my doorstep :D

Check out the viewsonic VX2268WM.

I have the BenQ and its not as smooth as the above monitor. Colours are decent but the benQ has better blacks.

I have to admit I got drawn into the hype around the BenQ, then I discovered it has major flaws that are seemingly very difficult to measure. My main problem with the benQ was that no matter what fps I tried in my favourite game (CSS), I could never get it to feel smooth (unless I used a stupidly high fps like 240, but then I cant hold that kind of fps constantly in every situation, so even a drop of 1fps resulted in it feeling like I was running at 40fps).

The input lag on the BenQ is also higher. Dunno how they managed to hype up that it has the lowest input lag, because the input lag on it is much more noticeable than on this viewsonic. I didnt have to compare the 2 with a camera, all I did was try out vsync on both monitors, on the benQ my mouse felt laggy, on the viewsonic my mouse didnt feel laggy.

I had the alienware, got it for £200 second hand (and just sold it on again for £200), it was decent when viewing straight on and the colours were good, but i suspect the premium price was not worth it.

I bought the Asus to replace the BenQ. Much prefer it. The gloss screen is nice in that the detail just seems sharper than the Benq. Maybe down to the matt screen on the Benq. If you have a strong light source behind you, say a window, I could see it being a problem during the day but I use my at night mainly so not a problem. The quality of the Asus doesnt seem quite as good as the BenQ, there isnt as much adjustment on the stand either. I have mine wall mounted though so it tilts and swivels much better now.
Personally I wont have mine for long all being well as Im saving for the 30" Hazro or 27" Dell.

Out of the current batch of 3D capable 120Hz TN panels, the Dell/Alienware offering is considered a leader by a slight margin which comes at a large premium for what it is. Asus is a good screen out of the box, much more so than the equivalent LG model, but both are very similar when calibrated.

BenQ is fine as a purely 3D screen, but the one I had was ruining shadow detail in most games I played with it at the time(survival horror, sneakers, etc), even after calibration, so I sent it back. The Acer of its size may well be of similar or better quality, but I never got to try it, so can't say either way.

^^ My experience with the Acer 120Hz panels has not been inspiring... the image always seems slightly soft and several friends have returned theirs due to backlight bleed or buzzing noises.

I still like the Samsung 2233rz best out of them tho even tho its 22" 1680x1050 - deep blacks, great color when calibrated, very low input latency.

The LG W2363D does seem to go unnoticed, considering the reviews giving it a good rating, like these :

The LG has the edge for response time and motion handling over the Asus VG236H accrording to the flatpanel site :

Personally, i'm wating for the 27" models, but I think I will 'try' the LG for the time being.

The Alienware is out of my margin by far.

Max £300 really.

I'm leaning more towards the Asus and would really like to know how bad the gloss glare is, I do have a window behind the pc but the curtain is almost always closed. Along with the light above which is normally always on though.

The Asus is a great screen, it's also fairly cheap. Ideally I'd like to keep it and get a large IPS for the slower games.

For gaming purposes the LG does seem to be the best between the two when it's set to it's 'thru-mode' according to the flatpanel and 3d blog reviews.

With regard to the glossy screen, it depends on how much light still leaks through with the curtains closed, if there is still sufficient brightness then it could be a problem with the screen for you, it really depends if you think the reflection would annoy you or not. But then if the room isn't too dark and especially at night you have the extra advantage of a clearer image and vivid colours thanks to the glossy screen compared to the LG. Just think of a crt for reflection.

Here is a few pics of the glossy screen in bright condtions :

I guess it's a case of try before you buy, or buy, try and return for a refund which is what i'm doing with the LG @<>@

the LG has no ability to disable Overdrive which also produce quite bad crosstalk( If thats what it is called)
From the pictures on 3d vision blog it's considerably bad compared to the Asus.

The reason i'm moving from this BenQ. Though the LG does have almost CRT quality input lag with THRU.

such a hard decision :(

3D crosstalk

Crosstalk refers to the phenomenon where the pictures intended for the left eye and the pictures intended for the right eye are not clearly distinguished by the 3DTV and therefore some of the different picture elements are visible when they shouldn't be.

This creates a transparent and visible halo effect around objects because the left and right images mix up, and it happens simply because the TV is fast enough (the response time and refresh rate is too slow).

Google '3d crosstalk' for more info, psychas @@

input lag with THRU

Most 3D capable 120Hz screens should have this "instant" processing feature, which bypasses some internal logic to reduce the delay between the card's rendering and the screen actually showing the full image. I know the Asus does, and on this stat alone the two monitors you are considering are not that different. To be honest, when you have a virtual input lag of 0 it would take frog reflexes to complain. (LG is marginally better, as per review, flatpaneslhd posted numbers for each; also a tad suspicious of the 3vision blog numbers, but that could be down to methodology, settings and individual sample)

Here is another link with LG and Asus models side by side showing a black image, with regards to your earlier question: http://3dvision-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/asus-glossy-vs-lg-matte.jpg

And more, with the screen on and an image showing: http://www.flatpanelshd.com/pictures/asusvg236h_large6.JPG

The crosstalk effect is not a big issue for Asus, aside from the bottom right corner, or left, depending on the sample - where it exhibits itself to an extent similar to LG's default, although it is clear Asus were working to alleviate this as much as possible. 3vision review has photos of this in particular. Still, if you are thinking of an IPS monitor for a second screen, LG's model does lose some of its natural advantages of being a better general purpose panel. Decisions, decisions! I'm certain you have all the info in this thread you need to make a good one, though. :D Best of luck.

Another aspect is are you really desperate to get one now ?

Do you want to spend £270 + on last years models, when this years models might be out within a few months and overall may perform better than last years models.

Being patient might be your best option :/
