Top 5 guitarists

I paid for one of the Evo passes a few years ago and got to hang backstage with Vai, play his guitars, got my P&W tab book signed, posted signed, pic with him, goody bag, best night ever really. Waited out the back of a Satch gig once and met him there. Good times.

I really like John Frusciante. I'm not suggesting he's anywhere near the best, especially not technically, but he plays with a lot of feeling and that is important.

Maybe you need to adjust your posting style then? Everything you post is very troll-like.

'Aggressive' I would say...so yeah I can see where you're coming from, though in all fairness I don't think he tries to derail threads.

In fact that is often why people get in to arguments, forum or otherwise, since what happens is a breakdown of communication.

i agree. i don't really like RHCP and prefer his solo stuff but i remember getting goose bumps when i saw this intro. wasn't that into the rest of the thing though

Tosin Abasi. /thread

Everyone mentioned so far are great guitarists in their own right but I honestly don't think there is anyone who is technically much better than Tosin.

Based on that, I'd say he's my favourite guitarist.

You take into account the music scene he's associated with and the musicians he has collaborated with and all he really needs is a mainstream platform.

I'm sure he could be considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Just my opinion.

Some of the guys (Gustov) who have posted their own vids in this thread, how long have you guys been playing?

Thought I would add some different things into the mix - none of these make my top 5 but always worth exploring different things and ways of playing - if you stagnate you only detract from your potential in my opinion. Often its moving out of their usual territory the great shine - eg Vai - Sisters, Satriani - Day out of the Beach etc

Don't know whether anyone else likes him but I have always thought Jeff Healey was pretty good - not the best video but hey ho:

Mentioned Miyavi earlier who has an interesting style - I tried playing this and can't get my head around it to be honest:

Along the same vein I do like this:

John Williams - a great classical guitarist;

Juan Serrano:

Might not be to everyones taste I guess but if you can not get past your own personal taste to see the talent then well you lose out as a player I think. If I get time I'll try and video my doing Day at the Beach or Little Wing as those are the two I play the best.

Hendrix
Gilmour
May
Knopfler
Clapton

This is what I'd agree with. I'd put Knopfler as my favourite guitarist though - such a unique player, great songwriter and crafts his guitar work brilliantly. Inspired me to pick up a guitar (and play it with the weird finger-style he uses!) and still does when he tours from time to time.

He has good technique for sure but after watching lots of his videos for the past hour on youtube I couldn't listen to him personally, no feeling for me but that's just my opinion.

Am always on the look out for new guitarists, was a big fan of malmsteen long time back but now I think his playing is very boring now, its just fast run after fast run and this is what I felt listening to this chap, its not all about speed and technique.

That's fair enough.

Might I suggest you take a chance and listen to his band's album (Animals As Leaders)? They only have the one so far.

It gives a much better insight into his all-round playing. He manages to make his music melodic, not just technical exercises.

None of this atonal nonsense that seems to be trendy at the moment.

Tosin's playing is excellent (although I'm not sure about the distorted tone on the album... might be all the effects layered on top) and good enough that he can obviously get all of the ideas in his head out on the guitar, but I wouldn't put him in the very top bracket of truly ridiculous technicians, which is reserved for people like Shawn Lane, Guthrie and Rusty Cooley, (although in Rusty's case his ability is somewhat wasted on generic shredding) who can/could seemingly do anything on the instrument effortlessly, at any speed, without missing a note or any sloppiness.

In no particular order:

David Gilmour
Adrian Smith
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Tom Morello

This guy does some magnificent Iron Maiden Covers he is pretty damn decent!

Even of you are not a Iron maiden or heavy metal fan you will appreciate how good this guy is.

Would be great to see David Gilmour live before he hangs his boots up for the last time but chances are very slim.
My friend is going to see Roger Waters live in Berlin and David Gilmour is supposed to be making an appearence.Lucky bugger!
