Top Gear 'hooligans' damage classic car

So just because it was classified as racing car 50 ago it means it can be reused as one off drive-me-to-death racing gokarts any time BBC wants? Come on - you don't burn clutches and return cars with bold tires after a test ride on the track. In fact you have to be just efing mean and try hard to waste a car to this level for one show.

on a modern car, maybe not no,

but those tyres, if their 50 yr old origionals .. or at the very least, not modern compund, then it may not take as much as you would expect...

Also, wont they be slicks anyway ? :) i very much doubt it was driven' there :)

as for clutch, well, they can go on the best of us.. again, let us not forget, this car underwent the hardest road test going, the Le Mans 24 hr..

Do you think it would have had a new clutch on after ???

I dont... authenticity and the rest.. probably means the clutch was on its last legs anyway, let alone 50 yrs of time on top!

Were all judging the results, based on what would happen to a modern car (in our own experiences) this is a 50 yr old car, hell, a standing sprint may well have cooked the clutch

:) its my local 'throw around lanes'.

It would have been simple to 'spin her round' but why :) if a puddle can break a car.. then i ask, what point the car ;)

Top Gear asked if they could use the car.
They asked if they could drive it hard.

That's hardly "any time the BBC wants", they aren't the government, they can't force the bloke into lending out his car - he didn't have to if he didn't want to.

But you'd be screaming off the top of your lungs if Clarkson brought your precious £1mln baby smoked and bald, wouldn't you? I don't think the owner object to it being driven hard - as I said - at full speeds and roar, but this is obviously not the case here. I'm sure that sort of car can be driven hard any time. But if the car was returned in state described what was Top Gear trying to prove - that even proven Le Mans 24 winner won't survive McCarthy's driving (who couldn't finish Le Mans on anything else it seems) or that 50 year old £1mln Jaguar can be riden to death just like regular Audi?

what would you have preferred ? they do it men and motors style ?

'Now, look at how shiny this is, lets polish it.. oooh oooooooooooooooh man thats nice, now lets go out for a risk stroll...

1000rpm...2000rpm,2500rpm change to second
repeat, change to third, bog it down and stall it at 45 !!

its a supreme racing car... it doesnt mind a bit of fun.

it would be a disgrace if they DIDNT drive it hard...

And as I said, I don't think the guy compains about it being driven hard, I'm sure he saw his father drive it much harder. He complains about the car being driven stupid, the car needed work after one McCarthy's test drive. Do you see difference?

First road test of the R34 Skyline I saw was on M&M.
Me and my mate sat there astounded, in tears of laughter as the guy pootled round a village at tickover raving about the "awesome power"

Whoa now, don't dramatise this. It's not ruined is it? It needs a set of tyres, a clutch and a driveshaft.
People race Ferrari 250 GTO's every week for the hell of it, because they love the cars. They try hard - sometimes there are big smashes too. But the cars were built to be raced and driven hard, don't forget that.

And don't single out McCarthy as a car murderer here, plenty of people retire from motor races each week and nobody bats an eyelid. Sure, if he systematically destroyed everything he set foot in then fair enough...but he doesn't.

I had two very old and unique cars in my life. I can only begin to imagine how a clutch, driveshaft and set of tyres for one of the only 3 50 year old Jaguars must be hard to come by. I can also understand how after driving a car for years it might be hard to believe someone can trash it in just one day on the track. And, most of all, I believe that in this terms McCarthy burning tyres, driveshaft and, no matter how old and tired, clutch can look no different than a youngster scratching bonnet of your 1976 Mini Cooper with his stupid toy.

From the looks of the report the guy was expecting his car to be "driven hard" round their track, which it was designed for..not for donuts etc...
We all know cars are for driving but if it was your car, be it a Micra or a Ferrari you wouldnt expect the car to come back damaged and if it did you would expect the driver to pay for it.

Of course you wouldnt, but accidents happen,

how many cars do they routinely abuse, that poor 'sensibly priced' car has been thrown round that track how many times ?

that VX220 TURBO, the abuse that took ? walked away without a whinge..

They just drove it like they would any other car... regardless of the price tag, it just happend that this car didnt like it!

I am SURE the Beeb will pay, what do they care, its not their money :)

Had Stig set out to break it, then maybe he would need a slap, as it was, all he DID was drive it like he would ANY OTHER!

I threw in the Mini just for the sake of the topic, because they seem to be so treasured in UK, but I can see I nailed the point on the head so hard it's gone through and missing. Change the Cooper to whatever precious Mini was manufactured at the time.

I suppose until we see the Jag in action (if they ever air it!) we cant say whether it was abused or not.
As i said a few "hard" laps round the track is one thing, donuts etc is another.
And ofcourse Vauhall etc arnt going to start shouting from the roof tops if theyre car breaks during a Jezza moment are they ?

Sure, they will shout at their designers and engineers, for not making a car that could withstand some 'light' tomfoolery

any car which cant stomach a doughnut, needs attention! imagine how it would behave on a motorway / autobahn!

Maybe if they HAD driven the Jag as a regular driver, and not stuck it in a museum, it WOUDLNT have broken :)

but

c;est la vie, my point is

[michael winner]
Calm Down, its ONLY a CAR, i am REALLY a very SAFE driver
