Top of the range system build

If I were you I wouldn't bother buying a graphics card, or anything for that matter, as new graphics cards are due out in a few weeks, along with new motherboards, CPU's and Windows 7, now is probably the worst time to buy, because you are still paying premium for old products.

Don't forget the possibly better bios :)

I'd probably have bought the extreme if it wasn't for planning on watercooling the near-identical ud5 anyway

^the old cpus/motherboards he's talking about are the i7/x58 ones which are very likely to be better than the 'new' ones coming out shortly

Lol, ain't that the truth - S1156 i7s at the same price as 920s but with less features. I think intel may be putting the lid on the 920 soon, it's too fast and cheap for it's own good.

That said that Lucid Hydra P55 board from MSI made me drool a little. Also, those new Gigabyte X58 boards look mighty nice, but i'm not sure whether it is worth holding out for their release.

Also, i'm betting in september we only see a paper lauch by ATI, with all the problems with 40nm its very likely we will see them in quantity a month earlier than their initial deadline, maybe i'm just cynical.

When is it ever a good time to buy a new computer? :D

I wasn't planning on buying anything just yet. I need to do some more research and read some more reviews before pulling the trigger. My goal is to place the order end of September.

When IS a good time to buy the kind of machine I want to buy and why? What is worth waiting for?

A way around it is to, set your heart on a system/components and then order said system 3-4 months later and be happy of the savings you made :D

mollymoo, dont mean to be cheeky but i have the same processor as you and was just wondering what cpu cooler you are using to reach 3.2 ?
Much appreciated, Thanks
