i apologise for turning the forum into a discussion place for my e46 hunt but i appreciate everyones opinions and knowledge here

two cars occuping my thoughts at the moment :)

this 323: http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=485376

and this: 320: http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=489574

both garages are pretty good by all accounts. i reckon i could get the 323 for 17.5 or the 320 for 20k.

Personally (from piccies anyway) im liking the darker navy colour and the cheaper price would offset my increase in ins and tax, ill probably keep for 12mths max and put on 8-10,000 miles

which would be the better buy???

or should i get something like a seat leon cupra/honda civic typer r, im only 25, too young for a beemer?

Where the hell do you live?

I dont think I could EVER succesfully post two examples of Cis where neither had Climate Control but both had leather!

Honestly, be patient and you could find an example a thousand times better than those.

Are you opposed to importing from the mainland or even NI?

Also

easy, 323, nicer looking and seats are much nicer.
WTF? Seats are the same.

Wrong. You do not know your beemers, sir.

What apart from one having full leather and one not? The seats are the same. In Ci models the seats are the same regardless of whether its a sport or SE (apart from real old '99 models that didnt have the thigh support).

not in ireland :)those are sports seats, a lot here have non sport leather, or worse non sport cloth !

no decent ones in NI as far as i can see, lot of hassle to import from uk and not much savings, unless someone can find me a really good 320/323ci with less than 50,000 miles for under £10k :)

Surely you can just come over here and drive it back though?

under 50k for resaleability, ill only keep it 12mths

i can go over to uk, drive it back and then pay a big whack of registration tax, also if i go over to see a car and its not what it seems its an expesive trip, and a rac report is expensive aswell if car turns out to be a duffer

No, Rep of Ireland is more European than we are! A country in its own right, the vehilce will have to be 'imported' and re-registered.

Sucks

If you can, look for a car in the north, it's only a couple of hours up the road and you'll get a much better specced car for the money. The UK cars seemed to be better specced and the exchange rate should work in your favour too. As a guide, I nearly bought a fully loaded '00 328Ci with 70k on the clock for £8000 sterling. It was an absolute mint example. An extra couple of grand will get you a car with less miles on it if that really is important. Don't discount cars with around 60-70k on the clock, some of them can be in better condition than lower mileage examples.

What's the tax like on those, am I right in saying it's around €1,000?

Anyway, out of the two you've posted I'd go for the 323Ci, it just looks better. The saving would help you out too.

not more european, less european,

vrt is anti free market, govt will eventually scrap it but are resisting seeing as they make 1 billion a year or so from it :(

A new bmw m3 is uk is 38,500 pounds, i think its about 95,000 euro :(

Jesus, is that 5-7k a year?

If there's nothing on Autotrader, have a look in Buy & Sell. I've spotted a few good cars in there. Also have a look at Exchange & Mart. I've just had a look on Autotrader and I can't spot anything but keep your eyes open, a few always show up every couple of weeks.

sorry scuzi yearly motor tax ranges from 711 on the 320 to 890 on the 323

the tax im referring to is to import tax which would be 5-7k on top of the purchase price

just out of curiousity whats the yearly tax on the 328 up north?

£160 sterling give or take a few quid. Quite a bit cheaper, I think it would be cheaper on the insurance as well. It might be worth buying yourself a house over the border :D

That import tax is a killer, does that still apply if you bring a car down from the north?
