Looks like more customers for Luminar Neo and On1 photoRAW
Having said that Affinity Photo is the only software not to offer a subscription service.

That's the way everything is going it seems.
Still if On1 goes subscription only I will stick with the final version as the 2026 will give me most of the things that it has been missing since launch. As for the cost of the subscription they aught to try to undercut Adobe by a lot however I think that Capture 1 and the full DxO combo work out more costly so I cant see what incentive people have to swap editors. Also plugins might offer more options if you own the software.

Software can be a bit like camera brands in terms of making a choice and going with what works best for you to achieve the result you want from an image. The important thing is the picture taking as no software can fix a bad picture. Haha, not yet anyway :D

fwiw I think the Adobe (photography) package is good value IF you make the most of Photoshop. For 3 coffees a month (2 if you live in London).

Same here I will stick with the final version before subscription and wait until another company comes out with an equally good standalone version.

Andy Hutchinson was pretty scathing of the latest On1 release and as RAW photo editor I have found it to be absolute garbage - particularly for my Fuji RAF files. I do still have On1 NoNoise 2022 that I picked up for £20 or something just before 2023 came out and it always did a half decent job at noise reduction although the competition has caught up now, but then again (as per the topic of this thread) the competition is gradually moving to subscription only so I'll keep that NoNoise for when I need it.

On1 has been in touch with Andy and has offered to give him access to development builds. As you can image the review has caused a bit of a stir. Personally I have used On1 for the past 5 years and found it to be well suited for my workflow, and it has been commented on in the On1 forum the raw engine does need an update but it works well with a lot of raw types.

Interesting about them reaching out to Andy, I wasn’t aware of this.

My next port of call will be Pixelmator Pro. I’ve considered it for a while but have been holding off for as long as possible to see what Apple do (or don’t do) with it. As it stands, it has pretty much everything I need in terms of a hobbyist Photoshop replacement as well as having decent RAW editing capabilities - however I’ve yet to find anything that beats Capture One for the latter.

I figure I’ve waited this long so I may as well wait and see if there’s a price reduction over Black Friday (hopeful more than expectant admittedly).

A quote from Andy Hutchinson on facebook

there's been follow-up emails so it looks like it will be a thing. Companies like On1 mistakenly believe that quietening dissent is a sensible business practice, but time and again we see the opposite. Interesting to note that DXO have a popular user support forum which is 1) full of critical postings about deficiencies in Photolab and 2) completely free to use. I'm amazed On1 charge extra just for access to user forums.

I was a keen Topaz user for a long time but when it comes to denoise it just isn't top of the pack anymore. I shelled out for PureRAW and haven't looked back, and certainly won't even try the future versions if they're on a sub model.

Topaz is now $69 a month .  Thats £53.

Can't see how they can justify this price.
The subscription model is terrible.

Gotta do an annual sub commitment to get it down to $37 a month as always they want commitment for a fairer price.

I'm also not a fan of the change however. As I just used Photo and Video AI from their suite of tools, at least I still have access to the versions before the change! so I will stick with my legacy builds going forward, unless some major improvements take place where I need them.

But if you use the full suite then it's good value I suppose.

I don't think it is though. Clearly value is subjective to a level, but in a month or a few months you can outright own competitor products that are as good or better. You could even buy updated software releases annually and end up with change in your pocket.
