Topping up memory?

Anyone had issues topping up memory with the same brand. Couple of years back put 4GB in a friend's machine, recently upgraded it to 8GB buying the exact same memory brand, speed, part number everything (Ballistix BLS4G4D240FSC 4 GB DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) CL16) but am getting crashes when using both sticks together, each stick on it's own runs stable?

Mixed stuff before like this over time without issue? Have I just been lucky or is there a bios tweak that needs making, I'd have a look but I'm 60 miles away from them at the moment!
 
i have a 4gb and 8gb ballistix sports 2400 in my current system working just fine and ive overclocked them to 2933, i had various systems swapping the ram between, so i had single 4gb then added a 2nd, then added a single 8gb now got the 4gb added. only both amd and intel i had no issues.

you sure the crashes are ram related?
 
Good to hear, i'm hoping its just going to be bios tweaking, as i say its rock solid on one stick.
