well im doing the three peaks challenge in 2 weeks and were in need of a few good torches for when we have to do part of scarfell pike in the dark. any suggestions ?

I'm guessing your going to need your hands free so a Headtorch would be best, here are a few I have used and would highly recommend:

Zebralight - I've used the H60 and it has an excellent flood beam.

Silva L1 - Excellent spot beam, you can get a diffuser for it if you need a wider beam pattern.

Princeton Tec Apex - Best of both worlds, it gives you a VERY bright spot beam and a pretty decent flood beam too.

Petzl Myo RXP - Same light pattern as the Apex above but a bit lighter, has a flip up diffuser if you want a flood beam - possibly your best option for what you want to do.

And if you win the lottery/are rich:

Scurion - The daddy of all headlamps. Will require a helmet but it outputs an insane amount of light for quite a long time. I've had the pleasure of using one of these and it's without a doubt the best headtorch I have ever used - not all that suited to walking but you can't get more light on your head anywhere else :)

If you're after a torch to hold, I've just purchased a Fenix TK11 R2 which I'm very happy with. Nice and bright, with excellent throw. I've also got a Fenix P3D Q5 which is slightly cheaper but still very good!

You could have done a search - we've covered this about 5 times this week!

I have:-

Romisen RC-N3 Q5 II - very small (same size as your index finger) - uses 1x CR123A batt or 2xAA with the included extender. Very bright(150 lumens / 10watt halogen) and 3hrs runtime on high with just the CR123A or 12hrs on med. Longer run times with the Extender. Auto swicthes from high>med meaning you wont be left in the lurch (or the dark1). This stays in my jacket pocket all the time.

Fenix TA30 - This is my camping/all round torch. Still not very big (C size maglightish but thinner) - really bright (225 lumens - same as a 15watt halogen), runs off 3x CR123A batts run time is 3.5/60/115 hours on high/med/low. Can tail stand so you can use it as a lamp with a diffuser. Incredibly tough - lifetime warranty.

(Discount avail to OCUK members from this store)

MG L-mini II - Size in between the above, 220 lumens, uses a rechargable 18650 lion batt, 3 hrs on high, 8 hours on med, 65 on low. Auto switches from high>low and med>low as well. This is my main bike light with the RC-N3 as backup. An amazing little light but as it's rechargeable only - if it dies you won't be able to buy spare batts from the local offy!

For your application I'd say the TA30 would be good - you're going to want a light with long run time that can take the wind and rain and some hard knocks. It can also use a couple of AA's in an emergency. If you're willing to sacrifice a little run time for a smaller torch then I'd recommend the Fenix TA21.

Get 6 spare CR123's (I doubt you'd use one set, but better safe than sorry) online for $1 each and you're sorted for a whole weekend.

You could also get a fenix headband to mount any of those torches too if you needed to go hands free - i.e. setting up a tent etc. i'd also recommend a red Fenix diffuser for night walking or map reading so as not to destroy your night vision.

Good suggestion with the TA30, it's cracking torch - I would personally get a LD20 over it though, purely because it uses AA batteries - You also can't use the Fenix Diffusers with the TA30 as it's got a fatter head than the standard LD20/PD30, etc. I'm not against non-AA powered devices by the way, I own a Dereelight CL1H V4 which uses 18650 batteries but for the OP's use I think AA's would be best.

Also, have you ever worn the Fenix Headband? It's the most uncomfortable (to the point of being painful) thing I've ever had on my head. Your far better off with a dedicated headtorch if you need head-mounted light :)

There is an LED version somewhere within the past few pages. Not sure how bright they are though?

Maybe ask in a camping store or something for flashlight suggestions?

yes you can - they do three sizes - I have the smallest and largest - the smaller one fits my L-Mini II and the bigger one just for my TA30.

yes - I use it all the time when pitching a tent or cooking at night all the time - no probs at all.

Ah, apologies on the diffuser... I was sure they only done one size for the LD20/PD30, etc.

I don't know how the headband doesn't give you a headache, it gives me a stonking headache after 15 minutes!

I have a Fenix 2-AA battery one and it's great. Very cheap to run as I just use rechargeables.

Ignore Skyfall, he's had a major crank on lately for some reason. He believes that anything that has previously been discussed on OcUK should never be discussed again, despite some people having very specific requirements.
