torn between i5 and amd fx8320

you cant go wrong with an fx8320 the rig in my signature plays battlefield 4 maxed out in 1080p at 65fps. i also would agree for the spec you listed the golden green 550w would be enough. i cant argue with that motherboard choice either its 8+2 phase power so should be fine.

the r9 280 wouldnt be too far off gtx770 performance either as the r9 280x is about equal to it.

i also 2nd the comment about ssd i run bf4 off my ssd and im nearly always first on the map with a countdown timer watching the other players spawn as they join. it makes a huge difference to boot times (mine takes about 40s and i have to put the password in twice), software installation times and many other things.

AMD's price/performance is very high already, it'd be bizzare to see them improve it anymore, although it's highly welcome.

That said, why would you downgrade on the basis of price/performance? Especially since that price/performance only really holds when you're buying brand new. Ridiculous logic.

For the sake of an SSD I'd take the FX83 + 280 any day, but I'd be inclined to take a hybrid SSD 1TB with a 4670K and 280 (Having set one of these up, although with a 290, I'm pretty impressed)

And if people applied the same logic they preach, most of you wouldn't own the GPU set up you do (Or in fact, the entire PC package you own), which is hilarious really, I mean, I'm reeling from the suggestion of an FX4300 for (As the OP wants) "High End Gaming".

Ah gosh, haha i meant a second rig, I'll be going X99 come september will sell the Z for funds towards X99 and some towards the AMD. I'm starting to warm to AMD

Plus, the AMD will allow me to use the 2 nVidia cards and the Intel can only do Crossfire. ( Currently the Intel is sat doing nothing and there is 2xGTX470 cards on the shelf, while the AMD is using the 2xATI )

Look up HyperSLI. It should get you working...

aha thank you.
Yes, I only added that PSU as I thought it's on offer anyway. But also thought 650watt would be enough for an Xfire setup in the future. Or would a 750watt be needed?
If so i'll get the 550watt.
Regards.

Well you'd want 750 W for crossfired 280Xs, and the non-X uses about 50 W less per card, so 650 W probably would be OK.

I think that's referencing my post? (I didn't write FX4300 though.) Read the OP again and it says 750 Ti (which wouldn't be a completely terrible match for a low end PD) in the same paragraph as "high end gaming". Sorry for not reading the OPs mind

He'd be wrong to get a 750Ti to get a higher end CPU, that's the point, he'd be getting a 280, because what he wants is a high end gaming rig, and the 750Ti wouldn't come into the equation.

And you say FX 4XXX. The 4300 being the best of that bunch (4350? If we're being pedantic)

Sure, an FX4300 and a 750Ti is a fine pairing, but it's far from what the OP wants.

WOW, now thats something that I would have loved to see a short while back... i.e. Before I spent like a nutter.

Only joking, it should be fun cos I also got a handful of cards that I can have a play with such as GTX260 ards and 8800GTXs and, well I got cards to play with is what Im saying.

Not that its matters too much.

Whether I chose the 980 I7 or stick with the 8350 in here, or whether I use the ATI or go with the nVidia... They are roughly on par with each other for my needs, but its just that the I7 will be more in a placaebo kind of way.

FX 8320 FTW

I personally recommend the FX 8320. Very good value for money. Got it running with a GTX 770 and I haven't ran into anything these 2 won't run on the highest graphical settings.

Do not link to competitors.

Ah yes. The parts are in my office as I type. Totalled £638. Went with the 8320 and xfx 280 amongst other things :). Ill be playing at 1080p and the upgrade to 1440p at december time. I wont be upgrading the cpu until 2016 though (and possibly the mobo).

I've had a 4.2ghz 8320 paired with 670 SLI and a 4.9ghz 8320 paired with a 7990 and I never saw any bottle necking or stutter.

I paid close attention to reviews of both 670 SLI (and the 690) and the 7990 to compare the results too and they were using Intel CPUs and the results were pretty much spot on.

The 8320 is going to become even more interesting now that AMD are price dropping again. Especially if there are chips out there as good as the one I have. Mine is a total pocket rocket.

Things are smoother for me now that I've gone X79. But, having said that Titan Black SLI and a 3970x cost a whole sight more than my AMD stuff. In fact, I bought the 7990 8320 *and* Crosshair for the same I paid for one Titan Black lol.

*When I say smoother I don't mean it in the term that people normally use.. You know ? "I just upgraded from AMD to Intel and now everything is smoother". Not that old chestnut..

I mean stuff like Crysis 3, where I can actually run 8XMSAA without any visible difference over not running any MSAA or just sticking to 4X on the 7990. So most of my smoother comes from having astronomical GPU power, not from the CPU itself.

Well done ... looking forward to your build thread :-)

maybe im just to old but my 1080p setup is just fine everything works that I throw at it :-) but then again I have no interest in benchmarking or having the fastest computer known to man :-)

My first build since 2007 so will have to check some guides on linustechtips or so but should be good haha.
