Torrenting at Work

Like someone already said, Secretary is a Director...small company probably has no policies or similar in place. Hell, no offense to Jock, but the I.T Manager has been appointed because he knows a little bit more about technology than the rest of them.

First thing to do with is speak with the MD and ask them about an ICT Policy and or Internet Use policy. If they don't give a monkies go back to your day job and don't worry about it. If he does care then explain to him about torrents and what it is doing to your company bandwidth let alone the risks it can have on your network. Let's not forget to mention if any investigation is had with downloading illegal material the business might get it seriously in the pooper.

Alternatively, get the I.T Consultants to block the ports on the work firewall and job done. It will no longer work for her, and she'll either balls up and ask why its not working or stay quiet - probably the latter.
Or just speak to the secretary... is there really any need to get so bloody clinical about it? Talk to them before getting all corporate on their arse :/

I would block access on her machine if I were looking after IT.

Remind me never to make you head of IT. Blimey.

Whether its wrong depends on so many factors its impossible to tell.

Does your organisation have an IT security policy in place? If so, does it bar downloading for personal use? If so, its wrong. If not, then, well, no it isnt unless its illegal material.

Secondly its a small company and she is a director. This means she can probably pretty much use her PC as she sees fit and does not have to justify herself to you.

She isn't an office clerk in a multinational corporation.

In a small company there is no 'mavity' of 'what she has done', especially given her position.

Why do people who work in IT always have some sort of edifice complex?
Edifice complex?

I work in a company of a 1000 users or so.

When we pick up torrent client on one of the machines it is a HR issue (essentially the person involved would get a warning).

I can see it being difficult in this situation where there are no "rules" as such as it suddenly becomes an office politics issue - especially as this user is director etc.

Good luck!

Steady on.

Most of these comments are coming from people who probably don't work in these kinds of places.

I come across this sort of thing (IM clients/Torrents etc etc) a lot. If its the general workforce I will nuke it and advise management if needs be and that they should consider putting something in place to prevent it - Whether they want to or not is their call.

If it's a company director, well - There is nothing you can do. You are employed to do their IT, not tell them what they can and cannot do, it's effectively thier policy at the end of the day and in some cases their business. What they do on their PC is a decision they make, not one I.T dictates.

Directors/management might well delegate the responsibility of control and monitoring to I.T but they will (should) never delegate the consequence part of a policy breach.

You go to her superior if she has one, regardless of illegal content and they make the call. You do nothing other than what you are told to do.
