TosLink from 360 to PC?

Friend of mine is trying to connect his 360 to his sound card using a TosLink cable, he has an MSI K8N which aparently has a input/output spdif, he seems to be unable to change it to input mode as it's always emitting light when it shouldn't be (if its an input).

Has anyone managed this?

Does he want to record the sound in 5.1?

If not just use red / white jacks to wire it into his Input on his sound card.

No no, he wants to use it like a line in, and have the sound played out his speakers.
