Total N00b needs help

Hello all. I have started a business in ireland which I am pleased to say is taking off very well.

I have had a lot of people ask me to build a website and a forum for this business.

I know what you are thinking. "wtf! Why the hell havent you got one already". The answer is a combination of things. At first I wasnt sure if it would take of so I was reluctant to invest big money (im 17), and leading on from that I didnt want to commit my customers to some **** like www.myspace/asdsa/asd/sa/dsa/dsa/dsa/dsa/das :rolleyes:

And I admit I have been a bit lazy

What I would like in relation to you is:

1. How to buy a domain name. Can you buy them or do you have to rent them?

2. How to set up a forum.

3.Set up some odds and sodds on the forum.

Now I have to say Im a TOTAL n00b when it comes to this.

I can write

. No seriously. I dont have any real knowledge of programming. I am however reasonably fluent with Dreamweaver 8. Spent a bit of time on it.

You basically own the domain name for as long as you register it. To purchase one you just need to find a registrar and register it then point it at your hosting accounts nameservers.

2. How to set up a forum.

There are plenty of prebuilt forum software packages such as phpbb. You just need to follow the instructions and install it.

3.Set up some odds and sodds on the forum.

Not sure what you mean by this. First user you add to the forums gets administrator access and can do all the required forum tasks via a web admin panel.

HTML is seriously easy to learn. I would put the time and effort into learning it and not use dreamweaver.

Can I host the website myself on a dedicated pc.

How safe will it be, and what specification pc will I need to run the pc efficiently.

At the moment all I could spare for such a pc would be

Pentium 4 3.4ghz
2gb DDR2 533Mhz Ram
250gb HDD (though I have another 640gb if needed)
8800GTS.

Would this run the pc well enough.

p.s any good places you would recommend for learning HTML

A p3 server would do you fine, its your internet connecton thats gonna be more of an issue....

Bugger. Got me a 3mb connection with 384kbps upload. No sodding way im getting that though. the latency is terrible

Get a dedicated server then, hosting from your house isnt too smart a move.
