Hey all,
doing my first ever build, so i'm fumbling along in very slow/small steps. mostly going okay, but i'm about to fit the vid card and i'm confused, as regards power.
the box came w/ a "speed setup" booklet (2 pages of English) and it's useless to a noob like me who has no experience. it says "reconnect the power cables" and has some drawings, none of which match the 2-into-1 cable in the box. one of the other review sites notes the card has "moved from the stock dual six-pin PCIe power connector setup to a single six-pin PCIe power connector sitting alongside a single eight-pin PCIe power connector."
so basically, what do i do? do i stick a 6-pin on it or an 8-pin? why does it have both? why is there a 2-into-1 cable, don't i just stick a 6-pin from my PSU onto the card, or onto the 2-into-1 and leave the other connector unused?
edit - found another link saying the card *is* powered by a 6-pin and an 8-pin, so i'm still confused re the 2-in-1, do i put one 8-pin from the PSU into the card and then 2 into the converter and then that into the card? that would seem more like three power connections.

thanks in advance.

You should have two 6pin+2 power connectors coming from your PSU labelled PCIE or VGA. Use these to connect to the power sockets on your card. The enclosed cables are only for you to use if your PSU does not have the correct connectors.

It all depends on your PSU, I just split away 2 pins from the PSU's two adaptable 6/8 pin vga supply leads for mine. If its connected right you will get both white LEDs ligh up next to the jacks.

The 980 Strix definitely needs both - 8 & 6 pin

As you can see in Spudley's pic he's used two 8 pin (6+2) connectors and just not used the 2 pin adaptor on one connection..

Cheers

Dont forget to install the Asus GPU tweak ( on the supplied driver DVD or new version on ROG forums) & clock the crap out of it to get some scores on the benchmark threads in true OCuk Fashion...

My Strix runs 24/7 using 1475/8000 without any problems,
Benching wise it'll go a little faster, I Hope youve got a good one too ;)

yes its supplied with a slight overclock from the factory
- Core Base Clock: 1178MHz
- Core Boost Clock: 1279MHz
It will probably run a good 15 % faster than that ontop again with nothing more than a simple software tweak ( & thats even supplied by the manufacturer with it to use)

Might as well get your ££££'s worth as its not the cheapest 980 out there.

i'll bear that in mind in the future, when i feel ready to fiddle!
meanwhile, i've VERY annoyed at having just discovered Win7 64bit has a 16gb RAM cap >:-/
so that's MORE money i need to fork out for an OS that's supposed to be fully 64-bit usable.

You should be entitled to a free upgrade to Window 10 come the summer. That will probably have a memory cap closer to Windows 8 than windows 7.
