Total War devs have Warhammer license!

Now that is pretty cool news. :) CA might just worm its way back in to my good books at this rate.

Will it be a (utterly unforgiving) story based campaign like the old skool originals, or something more total war... Not sure which I'd prefer actually.

I've long wished for an electronic version of "The Enemy Within" campaign so hope it's story based. Even if its not, hopefully I'll be able to destroy Altdorf with a skaven horde.

I can't see games workshop allowing them to make a game where battles are very similar to the tabletop game, especially if they have multiplayer so a total war game may not be that likely.

This is fantastic news. Long-time CA fan and Warhammer/GW is certainly near the top of my list of things I will get back into when I've finally given up acting my age.

Prefer Warhammer Fantasy over 40k so bonus points for that. As has been said, Epic would make for a great Total War-type setting though (40k is too small-scale for my liking, but I think DoW does a good job at capturing its essence).

Yeah, I don't expect we'll ever see a turn-based strategy game which basically emulates the tabletop rules. But RTS is quite different and has obviously been done before.

If they do a Warhammer: Total War, I wonder how they'll implement magic...

i fancy it will be like there current unit special abilities click on ability select location.

I wonder if there will be all races o only a select few. Also intrested too see how the campaign map will work. I WANT MORE DETAILS

Has anyone heard any recent news about this? I've seen nothing for over a year now. Hoping for something on the format of the game, even if no screenshots.

I'm excited but also not as CA really have a cyclical nature to making good games. M2TW was epic, empire was crap at release but improved afterwards especially when napoleon hit. Shogun 2 was great but then they released Rome 2 which I had such high hopes for as Rome 1 was one of my favourite Total war games to date...

However, going on that cycle Warhammer should be great! :p (This is obviously assuming it's their next game, especially since we haven't heard anything since this was first announced)

What your basically saying there is "empire was poor" which is fair enough, it was a big change in all aspects and it coped badly.

Lets not forget RTW had some pretty ballsy bugs in it until it was patched and there was a huge furore on the forums over the expansion packs (alexander + barb invasion) for it whilst the game was in such a state. Barb invasion was essentially a paid for mod update pack. shogun 2 started out rough and got patched well just as R2TW is doing (despite some odd gameplay choices introduced).

Will look forward to a warhammer game if they continue in this format (they might not) but there will be a load of butt hurt from the historical advocates that will moan about magic and fantasy being introduced just as much as people saying "yey warhammer".
