Hi guys,

your proberly sick of the sight of me and my threads lol but looking at getting into some total war games. I am totally new to the game and I dont really know which one would be best to play.

I am looking for a game that isnt a fast paced game, also I would like too play it on a night if I am away and dont really have a consent internet connection.

Which of the series are the best 1's + I am new so are they all the same?

Get Medieval 2 as it will be going very cheap somewhere most likely. If you get on well with it, Shogun 2 is also excellent.

I'd steer clear of Empire.

I liked Empire 2 better due to the scale of it, but yes as a beginner game it could be a bit much. I found Napolean's map too small, same with Shogun 1/2. You could do worse than start way back with Rome, that was awesome and should be really cheap now.

Rome is still the best for me. Play it through. Then replay it with the Rome Total Realism mod.

Empire had potential, but naval units being bugged made it pointless really.

Empire has been my preference for a long time, but steer clear if you're not a TW veteran really!

Rome is my hands down favourite! Still play now!

By far the best ones to get you started in Total War are Medieval 2 or Rome.

They are very similar in gameplay (they didn't really make any major changes unlike the more recent ones) so it's really down to your preference in period.

Personally I prefer Rome. I find the factions' units much more diverse than M2 and I like the cleaner, look/feel.

M2 is more about the dirty politics, balance between cities and castles and has a much more earthy, grimey feel IMO.

Either of those should set you in good stead :D

M2 and the expansions are probably the most accessible to new players. They have fairly good graphics and are massively replayable. Shogun 2 introduced some very cool new features. Avoid Empire like the plague, although people say Napoleon was better. Rome was great at the time but, for me, had a lot of niggles and (un-modded) is very dated now. Shogun 1 is really for retro-heads and purists.

My personal preference is for Empire. I just love the setting and the huge map. Not a fan of the Shogun 2 settings, even if, like others have said, it is the better game.

I couldn't get on with Shogun 2, not that into the setting/history of feudal Japan depsite being a solid game.

My all time favourite was Rome followed my M2. I really wish Empire amounted to more.

Bring on Rome 2 though!

Isn't it Rome 2 next?

I think there were also rumours of a post Napoleonic era also....but it could just be Rome 2 instead. I think I read somewhere where the devs were thinking of ideas for more modern era's, hence the Fall of the Samurai is like a test case using more modern weapons as opposed to swords and spears etc...

There is really none to avoid. Just pick the time period you would rather play in and away you go. I love them all i really don't think there is a bad one

If you want an easy one to get into, Shogun 2 is probably the one. I'm going to go into Napoleon and wipe up the story this summer me thinks, I kinda left that one for a while.

Although the Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai looks to be MIGHTY GOOD for those into the Napoleon/Empire gun play. WINK WINK. You know. LOOKS TO BE VERY FUN.

NOT SUGGESTING ANYTHING THERE.

COMES NEXT MONTH.

WINK.
