Total War Series

I own the all from Rome onwards. I would say the most easily accessible would be Rome, medieval2 or shogun2.

Rome is a great game, but is looking a bit dated. For that reason I would probably recommend medieval2, for someone new to the series.

I think Rome was my fav

I dread to think how many hours Ive put into that game over the years

Rome all the way. I always found that the easiest to play and the easiest to follow/understand. Once you've mastered that, move on to Shogun 2/Medieval 2. Though personally out of them both I prefer Shogun 2.

Something about Feudal Japan... it's kinda awesome.

Mind if I ask in this thread if anyone has pre-ordered Fall of the Samurai? It's super cheap at the rainforest and may also be an interesting game to look into. What I've played of it so far is promising, though it's only been online battles.

It's a boosted up, refined Empire on a smaller scale lol. I'm not a massive fan really, the artillery is completely overpowered. I prefer Empire :)

Rome 2 is just a rumour, Looking at how they've done with Empire/Napoleon and now Fall of the Samurai I really expect the next one to be around the turn of the 20th Century!

I hope Something along the line of pre-WW1 Europe & it's colonies in Africa & China!

Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 are pretty outdated these days although they still hold their own if you play on an older machine. Easily one of the best strategy games ever.

Rome Total War is my personal favourite, no other game from the series had that feel to it (except for maybe Medieval 2). My favourite mods are Rome Total Realism and Europa Barbarorum.

Medieval 2 has the best modding support yet with mods like Third Age Total War and Stainless Steel being some of the largest projects on the modding scene of any games. Europa Barbarorum is the most anticipated mod since Black Mesa (lol).

Empire Total War had by far the biggest map of all games and introduced proper naval battles. I don't like this instalment and think that it put the series on the wrong track. At this point Creative Assemble limited tools for modders which resulted in lesser quality mods in future games.

Napoleon is more battle-focused, fixed some elements that were lacking in Empire but lacks the immersion of the previous game. Least to say I don't really like guns in Total War games, not really my cup of tea.

Shogun 2 has improved on many of the aspects that I found poor in the previous two games and seems to be somewhat better than the first Shogun but I still think it's behind Medieval 2 and Rome since it is a fairly limited game in many aspects.

Rome is my favourite, it's pretty cheap on steam and you can get a lot of play time out of it. They're all excellent games, but as a new player you might want to get used to Rome / Medieval 2 and maybe Shogun 2 before attempting Empire & Napoleon. I love Empire, it's just a lot more difficult to keep track of that Rome.

Yea, having infantry with muskets in Empire and Napoleon really changes how the game plays within battles compared to melee only infantry.

All of the TW games are great but, for an entry point I would say Shogun 2. Though if your hardware isn't very capable then I would say Rome.

Avoid Napoloeon and Empire until you are a bit of a TW veteran, it took me a very, very long time to get to like those two. Even after putting about 200 hours into Medieval and Rome.

I agree with the masses here , i've had most total war games and rome was excellent , medieval also. Empire might be "to much , to soon" if you have not dabbled in these sort of games.

I never did get around to buying shogun 2 although i meant to so i cant really comment on it !

i preferd napololian above the rest. dont know why, mabay the muskets

What's Napoleon Total War like?

Got Napolean a few days ago, played it for about 30min. Its full of bugs and almost unplayable.

Had 2 game killers within that 30 min of playing

1) unable to repair buildings
2) unable to save

Dont think ill buy another total war again.

That said love RTW and MTW2 excellent games

To the above poster: Never play an unmodded TW game. Setting yourself up for all sorts of problems :p

Shogun 2 is well worth the £7 it is now. Really good game and a perfect start to any TW career.

My favourite has to be Empire about 2 years after release with DarthMod attached to the game. This makes it an absolute hoot and loads of fun though its still a little easy to win.

M2 is another brilliant game and is agreat for a couple of quid shot in the sales.

I would suggest that if you already know a lot about one of the time periods units / tactics / history then choose that one.

I already knew a lot about Roman / Empire era tactcs and history and had loads of fun.

Reeeeally didn't get on with M2, just didn't find it as interesting or fun at all.
