Touch Typing

There's quite a few touch typing programs around that make you go through the exercises. The trick is to just keep doing it, and not to go back to bad hunt & pack habits just because your touch typing will be slow to begin with.

You quick typers give this a go http://10fastfingers.com/typing-test/english average ~100 highest 109

You probably know this already, but please don't take those results to mean you can type over 100wpm.

EDIT: Did it once, bad attempt, 108. Think I've got 125-130 on that site before but the lack of punctuation and actual sentence structure adds 20-30% to my wpm.

http://www.typingtest.com/ and http://www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php give far more accurate estimates.

EDIT2: Second attempt, 121WPM.

I don't touch type properly though, I only use the index finger on my right hand. Think it comes from typing with my left hand while having my right hand on the mouse.

I don't touch type properly, i can certainly type 'quickly' and mostly accurately without looking, but its more of a 2 fingered approach i've adapted over the years.

It works for me but i've always meant to learn proper touch typing.

Don't forget mIRC. 20+ channels of constant spam and drivel :p. Also I think gaming in general, ie typing in game and not being able to look down, helped too!

Saying that I can't touch type properly - I only use two fingers - but I don't need to look at the keyboard and type very quickly.

I can type blind using 4 fingers but I wouldn't be able to place the right letters on a keyboard if you asked me to.

muscle memory right?

I forced myself by buying a Filco Ninja keyboard and getting replacement black keys so there's no letters on them, you quickly learn although the first two weeks aren't the most productive unless you're in the swearing industry.

MSN chat
IRC
Early Counter Strike/UT99 without a mic (you *********ing **** faced piece of ****!)

Makes me nostalgic now. :( I'm not meant to feel old at 24! : ((((

I have to look at the keyboard, I use 3 of my fingers on each hand mostly. I can type pretty quick but I am bad for typos, made worse by being dyslexic.

MSN was how I learnt to type fast though. Back in the day I had 500+ contacts so often had up to 10 convo's going on at once. Bit different now though :(

Used to use Mavis Beacon at school sometimes :p

Quite funny to see how little my right hand does, looks a bit disabled compared to my left!

Pretty good but it's not touch typing.

Touch typing refers to a specific method of typing using a home bar, not typing without looking.

From what it looks like you just have muscle memory like myself and many others. Although your viewpoint was weird as hell.

I use 4 fingers and my right thumb. I can touch type for around 5 seconds after each look at the keys to remap them in accordance with my hands position.

Never been able to learn to touch type.

Touch typing is just typing without looking and is muscle memory... You don't have to do it by the standard method for it to be called touch typing.

EDIT: Also I do use the home keys, I just don't have to return to them particularly often when typing full speed. Easier to notice for my left hand than my right, but I assure you that busy index finger returns to J after its travels.
