So last Thursday, one of those lorries that carry earth, stones, etc dropped a big clump of earth out of the bottom of it (the truck looked empty but obviously still had some left in the bottom of it). I heard it hit my car but it sounded more like underneath the car. When I got to work I saw the impact on the front edge of the bonnet. There are four or five chips. Most of them are shallow but one of them is quite deep.

Because of the holidays, I've only today managed to get someone to take a look at it today; my local ChipsAway guy who was recommended to me by a few folk. He had a look at it and said that he couldn't do it because of where it was on the bonnet. He would struggle to blend it in. He told me I'd be better just touching it up just now to protect the bodywork.

I have a VW touch up pen but I'm wary of making a mess of it. The car's only 2 weeks old so I don't want to go down the route of a full bonnet respray already.

Is it really the case it can't be sorted without an expensive full panel respray? Or is it because he doesn't have the tools of a bodyshop and it's something they could sort?

Pic of chips, taken at night so not great.

Pic of another car showing where on the bonnet the damage is.

Get a 2 piece touch up kit made, do it over a few days filling the paint upto the correct level, get it as perfect as you can then use some off the shelf cutting compound (g3 paint renovator is my preference) to blend it in.

If that's a new car, I'd seriously look to correct your washing technique :p those swirls are horrendous lol

I have some Meguiars Scratch X, will this do the same job? If not, I'll get some of the above from Halfords. I already have a VW touch up kit for my paint which has the base coat and clear coat.

If you're referring to the lines near the chips, could have been a combination of the dirt impact and me wiping it off. You don't see them in daylight.

Hi from the other side sparkymark75 :) Someone suggested chipex. Might be worth having a go, as it has got to be a bit better than touch up paint from VW surely. They have a solution to get rid of the excess paint.

I did consider it but they're closed until the new year and I'd rather get it sorted sooner rather than later.

PS. I recognise your username, are you on the vwroc forum?

Yup busted :D the signature should have gave the game away that I was a fellow R owner.

I have a small chip on my lower bumper and one on the a-pillar (dont know how that got there), only my R for 3 months.

What are you planning on doing with yours? Leaving them or ChipEx'ing them?

Btw, ChipEx isn't anything special, its just paint, cutting compound and finishing compound in a kit, go to your local halfords, they'll mix it up as long as you have the paint code.

So my plan then is to use a cocktail stick with the VW supplied paint to fill the chips. Doing them in thin layers. Then use Scratch X 2.0 (or something else?) and then finally apply the clear coat?

Is that the best approach? Just want to make sure I get this right before I tackle it tomorrow while the weather is still dry.

Sounds good.

The key thing is, less is more. Dont rush it, make sure the surface is well prepared (ipa etc) and do it in little stages at a time.
