Touch Vs Physical keyboard

Just moved over from a nokia 5800 touchscreen to a nokia e72 qwerty style keypad, its taking some getting used to but every message I send is quicker each time!

I have an HTC Desire and to be honest i much prefer a hardware keyboard.

However...

Losing the keyboard means you get a much nicer device and the trade off was worth it, the touch keyboard isn't that bad and the pro's from having more real estate on the device are definitely better than any cons.

Didnt think i could get on without a physical keyboard, touch screen was difficult but swype made it for me tbh, dont think i could do without it

My last phone (Samsung i900) was a touch screen and I never really liked that at all, I found it hard work, not very accurate or comfortable. My BB Bold 9700 with hardware qwerty keyboard is so much better though, I can type fairly fast on it with no mistakes.

Nthing the Swype comments. It's great for texting. I still like the physical keyboard on my Dext for entering URLs though.

(N900) Can use either, but find myself using the physical one more, even though the screen edge gets in the way of my thumbs a little, big hands. I'm a lot slower when using the on screen. In all fairness though, I'd probably get better with the on screen one if I used it more often.

Thanks for all the replies people, I tried the swype app and I just didn't get it, how am I supposed to know exactly where keys are when they're under my finger?

I had a go with the normal keyboards but downloaded the Smart Keyboard app, this greatly improved portrait mode for me using the T9 keypad is really fast and easy to type one handed too, one handed being difficult with a full qwerty or the G1's physical keyboard. After a little tweaking and again using the Smart Keyboard I find it almost as easy to type on the on screen keyboard as with the physical one and probably as fast.

So all in all I think I'm pretty much ready to cast off the shackles of the physical keyboard and go for a full touch device.

Skyfall are you going to get the Desire or something else? I can't make up my mind between the Desire or the Nexus One. I was thinking about getting the Desire from T-Mobile as a upgrade from my G1 and then selling it to pay for the N1.

I'm also gutted I will be loosing a hardware keyboard but give it another 15 months and something better will be there.

Probably getting a Samsung Galaxy Portal, not quite got the money to get anything better and my contract with t-mobile isn't up until October.

Hardware for speed and accuracy, onscreen for convenience, flexibility, and bulk. I've gone from a TyTN to an iPhone, and much as I loved the keyboard on the TyTN, I wouldn't go back out of choice - though I'm still very wary about onscreen keyboards as a few work, but many don't.
