Toyota GT86 - One year review.

Like drink more fuel, cost more to insure, more to service and throw up bigger bills when it breaks?

Didn't read my full post did you? I get your point about it being a different proposition though.

Pioneer, really? An Exige can hold 4 adults comfortably? It has a large boot? It's not as quick?

Fair comment :) I read as far as 'My Evo 8 FQ-300 does everything better than the GT86' and thought errrr..........

Apologies.

The question for me is, what does the GT86 offer that the 200sx s14 and s15 didn't 10-20 years ago?

The answer is very little besides beinga production model currently.

In a couple of yearsI'll wanta second car and it's more likely to be an s15 or MR2 turbo than a GT86.

Mod cons, modern styling, and a warranty. :)

You could use that argument for a lot of cars to be fair. :p

But this isn't a second car. It's my primary car. So being current production is actually pretty high on my priority list and counts for a hell of a lot. I wanted a fun car, but also wanted a "new" car with all the benefits that provides. It may not be as quick/capable as the cars you mention, but I'd wager I have just as much fun in it as in those. And fun isn't really a quantifiable thing.

A nicer interior, less worries about mechanical faults and general tiredness. The biggest one though is no worry about rust which you'll likely find on all but one 200sx.

I think picking at the clock as a proof of dated styling is a bit much! Especially in a sports car.... Such things are waaaay down the list of priorities. There is a clock, it tells the time.... What more does one need in a car like this?

Bang for buck though, I recall there being far better options - even more justified when you consider the cost of the 'optional' mods that you'll most likely want to perform on the vehicle to get it *just right*.

But i'm not the typical owner - i'll shy away from spending additional money on a vehicle to modify it, and save up that cash to buy an OEM faster car that suits me better (and use finance too :( ).

I personally don't think they're that expensive - we're all effectively used to hot hatches and the like, where the series production "normal" models subsidise the majority of the R&D cost and the hot model is therefore cheaper. When you compare it with the Mazda MX-5, at a list price of about £22k as a similar spec, though slower and less practical (though of course with the benefit of a folding hard top) it looks much better value. BRZ is available for under £21k new ATM.

There's a gorgeous one of these in Plymouth with 80's style riveted arches and is apparently blown, it went past me on the A38 with a nice "psht". People getting bogged down worrying about them being "under powered" should remember the AE86. Twenty years time kids will be paying thousands for these.

Nice review :-)

Not sure that's exactly right. Remember the ae86 only weighslike 998kg..

Was browsing some mods this morning. They claimlike 17whp from a intake manifold spacer mod (increases runner length) only about £300 or so forthe kitand30 minute bolt on install.

if i had a gt86 id get the perrin intake and the spacer!

I've owned a GT86 for four months and it really is a genius little thing.

The attention to every detail of the driving experience really shines through whenever you get into it. The driving position, interior trim, the balance of handling.

I owned an ae111 and it's uncanny how similar it is in some respects.

I also don't know of any other car that has been made that has been a mesh of 2 manufacturers and executed so well. The exterior styling is very Toyota and the engine is obviously a Subaru product.

A unique proposition in every way. It took me 4 months to finally get it.

Few people at work have them and rave about them. One is more interested in MPG though.

I still can't see why you would buy one over a S2000 though

S2000 costs a lot more to run and many are reaching the point where a lot of work is needed on them now. Also not as usable as an every day car. The GT86 has a reasonable boot, "back seats" and more equipment.

Anyway, the driving position in the GT86 is one of the best I've experienced and it handles like a way more expensive sports car. It's surprisingly comfortable as well. The only issue I have is the gear shift can be a bit stiff, especially when cold.

I'd argue the opposite, of the biggest running cost, depreciation - one is depreciating the other isn't.

Sure if you need a 'back seat' but the Honda is more focused, has a better engine, amazing gearbox and that extra 40hp. Sure the GT86 is newer but I'm not sure about Hondas 'needing a lot of work'?
