I'm looking to pick up a TP-Link VR900 to replace what is now my 4th BT Smart Hub.

Looking around I can pick the White TP-Link VR900 up for £99, however the black V2 is around £130.

I don't mind having either the White or Black but was wondering is the v2 better in any way and worth the extra £30?

I've read reviews on a similar model with V2 and the revised hardware performance was 25% better on wireless throughput.

Not to say this is strictly true on this model.

I sent them a tweet and they responded with

Hi Darren - We strongly suggest the V2! Thanks, ^TC

Not really that helpful but I didn't expect them to advise anything other that the V2

V2 has 2x usb 3.0 ports, V1 has 1x usb2.0 and 1x usb 3.0 port. I think minor changes overall, I've had the V1 for over two years now, it has been excellent, rock solid connection, very good wifi range and speed, I'm two floors up from my vr900 v1.

I'm using latest firmware dated this year as well(easy to upgrade manually).

I can't really fault it, if I'm honest.

Great, well I won't even be using the USB ports so if that's potentially the only difference I may just pick up the V1.

I've dropped TP-Link support an email as well to see if they can further expand on the changes. Different chipset etc.

Will see what they comeback with and hopefully make a purchase over the weekend.

This thread made me notice there was a new firmware for the V1 released in January. I think I stopped checking at the end of last year when there was nothing new after March.

One retailer has the V2 model for £95 right now (most places are £125+), in case you didn't know.

I would only buy it if you don't mind using a separate modem though: neither model supports G.fast. I've accepted that I'll need to use a separate modem again if that ever materialises at my cabinet (unless I need a new router for something else before then).

This thread is a top result on google when searching for the difference between these routers. Seeing as I couldn't find the answer anywhere else and this is still a popular combined VDSL router I thought it was worth a necro for completeness.

i am in the market for a new router for my Vodafone fibre. Is there anything worth considering over this for around £100?

The only other one I have seen is the NETGEAR D7000-200UKS but is £130.

Just got the v2 set up and it’s bloody brilliant!

Get 380 in the same room and 300mb in all other rooms of the house! I’m on a 1940s built semi

I've just got in from visiting my father and now get this in all rooms of the house, I even just sat my laptop as far aware as I possibly could from the hub, upstairs in the front bedroom. Still get the same!

You should be more than happy with it to be honest!

Finally got this installed today. Was a breeze, was up and running in a couple of minutes.

I was getting around 67 Mbps on the stock Vodafone router on the 5Gz channel, now getting the FULL 75. :)
