Trace number plate to address?

What if the "independent witness" was actually the perpetrator and acted as a witness to throw your investigation off course? WHAT IF?!

Did you get the details from the witness, unless this guy just goes "oh ok, here's some money" then you're going to have to involve police/insurance and they're going to want a 3rd party witness.

It's more likely that the perpetrator grew old after spending a lifetime in guilt. This made him decide to travel back in time and give his OWN details to the OP.

Why will police or insurance HAVE to get involved? It's a civil case for the small claims court (potentially). OP is going down absolutely the right route.

Because the driver left the scene of an accident. It's frowned upon.

Putting that aside, my point about about having the details of the independent witness is still very much valid!

Plus majority of T&C for insurance advise that they need notification of any incident involving the vehicle they are providing insurance to.

Can't believe people suggesting to the op to leave it. Seriously, from some of the comments, people really do need to stick up for themselves more!. If someone damages my car, and I find where they live, they have got some explaining to do,hopefully they admit and its all sorted,if they dont, its easy to get payback. Im sure to the op,and other like minded people, this makes sence.

update

Any updates on this story?

I had a road rage incident then an arson attack 6 hours later on, maybe coincidence but you never know.

Agree

Why do some people assume the guy who dented his car can fight like Jason Bourne and the OP is going to be knocked out if he knocks on his door? I certainly would be trying to find the guy if it was my car.

Wow, what a thread.

The DVLA probably wont give you his address anyway and even if they did, you probably won't achieve much unless you are an uber keyboard warrior.

Give the numberplate to your insurer - THEY can obtain his address quite easily and attempt to claim through his insurance company. This is far more likely to result in him rolling over and accepting it than some random guy turning up at his front door.

Why the OP didn't involve the police is beyond me. They could have contacted the alleged offender immediately and forensically examined the car to confirm that any traces of paint matched the damaged vehicle.

If true, sufficient evidence for both a criminal prosecution and civil damages. Job done.

Find out where they live and send them a letter via a solicitor telling them you have a witness to the incident and would like them to provide their insurance details. You may find out where they live but do you want them to know where you live?

Post pics of yourself OP and we will rate you how intimidating you are on a scale of 1 to 13. 13 being most men would just let you have sex with their wives on site because of how fearsome you are, 1 being your average OcUK poster. This will help decide what action you should take.
