Track car project - including diary of a track n00b

You guys are hardcore! Were you not tempted just to do up one of your road cars for track use? ;) Great project tho.

This all sounds excellent fun, i've spent the last hour or so reading it all on the mobile!

I have one perhaps hilariously ignorant question if i may, what exactly is a 'sprint'? I'd check that link with the video but dunno if the phone will cope!

Anyway, i want a house with a driveway!

Go for it! Looking good. Shame about the weather recently. Doing the same to a 19 atm, new windscreen tomorrow and sill welding on saturday. New parts ariving over the next few days hopefully for a saturday MOT! Just need nice weather!

Its great fun! :)

houses with drives rock. I can fit two estates and a roadster or hatch on my drive which is mega useful. The only downside is my parents use my drive for airport parking..

yeah tell me about it. I am a ground floor flat, but have a double driveway. Although its near a main street, so I preffer to use the rear secure car park. Better when I leave the car on stands over night etc

It's like a hillclimb but without the hill. Basically you complete a short point-to-point course on your own against the clock. You get multiple runs over the course of the day. Fastest time wins.

Got insurance sorted today, just 3rd party to get us to/from events plus it'll mean we can use the car as a backup should one of the road cars be out of action for any reason.

Bit more than I wanted to pay. Cost a whole £172 (/Watches the kids of the forum start crying :p)

Just a standard policy with elephant. Got them to give me 5 years NCB based on already having my daily drive insured with them.

1st March

No pictures today as nothing was really done worth documenting! I continued chipping the soundproofing, and have finally finished this awful task. The whole bag of chippings I created weighed 10kg, so that’s some weight saved!

Phil had other things to be getting on with today due to his car failing the MOT on Friday and also Sakura’s being due at the start of March. We know she is going to fail and is already booked in for bodywork, however her brakes also need attention. So once I had finished the soundproofing, I helped Phil change the brake fluid, and we also found some other problems which would explain why her brakes had been so pants lately. Good!

There have been some interesting announcements in the Sprint Series this week. They have managed to get a sponsorship from Toyo tyres which means cheap tyres for us!! The best thing about this is they are doing the deal on the tyres Phil decided would be the best for us. We got a very good deal, although we aren’t allowed to disclose the price.

The other announcement was that Toyota are entering 5 diesel Auris’s (Aurisses?) in the series. The are going to be driven by a different driver at each event and we have been told to look out for celebrities and racing drivers as well as general customers, employees and press.

We have paid our entry fees for the first round, and currently there are only 3 drivers in our class. It is official that I’m the only girl driving too. However we beat the Aygo class as that only has one entrant! I will be soooo gutted if that beats me though.

We still have a few things to do, the seats need fitting which is going to take some bodging. We also plan to do an oil change. I still haven’t cleaned Humphrey but obviously this can be done last. We will soon get our entry pack with sponsor stickers and numbers to plaster all over him too. He looks like a racecar on the inside now, with the stripped out interior, but the logos and number will make him look like one on the outside. Hurrah!

nasty nasty stuff, i found nitromorse to be particularly effective at getting rid of those little bits it leaves stuck all over the place.

Received an important delivery today:

9th March

ONE WEEK TO GO!!!

Phil has taken next week off work to get the last few bits sorted. We have had a bit of a setback with Phils car failing the MOT last week and Sakura failing this week! This weekend has mainly been spent getting Phil car ready for the retest which he passed on Saturday, and having a look at what we are going to do with Sakura.

The only work done on Humphrey were an oil change, top up the gear box oil and then grind off the front towing eyes. That might sound like a bit of a silly idea, but the towing eyes at the front were really only there for tying the car down, and are connected to such rust prone area that it’s a gamble trying to tow from them. It’s better just getting rid of them and pointing to the tow points further under the car! (Hopefully we wont have to be towed anyway but it’s a requirement to have marked tow points!)

So there might be some updates in the week but if not, the next report will be the Sprint report!!

12th March

The seat is in and the tyres are on!!! Unfortunately it’s been peeing it down since the tyres went on so we haven’t had a chance to really try them out yet!!!

At the moment we still have a standard seatbelt in, although we have managed to get some proper harnesses for a 2 seater car, which will be in before the end of the Season!

The steering wheel is a pink suede Momo job, which I had in my last classic Mini! It’s been kicking around here ever since I sold my lovely Mini as it was my sole reminder of her. I’m really glad it’s being put to a great use now!

Today, Phil is mainly pottering and just doing little jobs. He has removed the back trim from the numberplate:

You can also see the TOW stickers on this pic!

He has taken the heater out and made a very neat job or re-routing the pipes in the frunk:

A few other weight saving things happened in the frunk, plastic trim has been removed and also the clips for the sunroof storage.

Here is Humphrey from the front, along with TOW stickers!

I’m also publishing this diary and reports from events in a magazine called MR2 Only, which is quite exciting!!!

I thought I’d best try on the gear again and get in the car. I’ve never driven with a helmet on before so it’s going to take a bit of getting used to I think!
