Track Car Project

Hi again guys, here is a bit of an update on the car. We are now preparing the car for rally, as that is what we really want to do. At first the car was just going to be an occasional track car, but over time we slowly drifted to the idea of building a full on rally car, and have now fully committed to this. Obviously this does bump up the time scale and cost of the project, but this has always been our real passion from the start.

First off the biggest change is that the interior is now white. As you can see on the picture we have fitted braided brake lines throughout which make for a very neat finish. You can see the brake line coming from the master cylinder in the engine bay, to the bias valve and off to the rear beam where it meets a t piece to go off to the rear callipers.

The line has been fixed in place using rubber lined P clips which keeps everything nicely in place.

Next up we have lightweight aluminium door cards, we also have alumimium panels in the rear to blank off the cavities. These tidyed the interior up no end and look much better than having the internals of the doors on show.

From the rear you can see that there are now boot springs and mudflaps. The huge size of the mudflaps is to comply with the MSA rallying regulations.

If we take a look under the car from the back you can see the braided brake lines running along the rear beam, which we have painted to add some rust protection. It looks like the fuel tank needs this treatment next!

In the cabin all excess wiring has been removed, leaving just the bare essentials for the car to function. We have a black sack full of wiring and connectors that came out of the car, who knew you could remove so much.

We are also in the middle of rewiring and rerouting the wideband lambda sensor to make it more neat and tidy, you can just see the lambda connector sticking up through the floor infront of the gear stick.

Up at the front you can see the mudflaps also on the front wheels, along with the new tyres fitted to the new wheels.

We are hoping to have bought the cage within a month of the new year but for now we are keeping busy making the car look as tidy and professional as possible. The dash will be going back in once we have finished with the wiring and brake lines. The plan is to have the car ready for competition somewhere near the end of next year, I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Just to finish off, here are a couple of recent videos.

We will be doing special stage rallying. We have our copy of the blue book and as confusing as it is we are following it to the letter. The good thing about stage rallying is that you can do pretty much anything to the car as long as you follow the safety rules.

We attend Wickham and district motor club every Wednesday night where there are a lot of people who have built and owned many a rally car so their advice comes in very handy too.

Our main aim is to have a safe, well prepared car that will be reliable.

Nice one, I used to do road rallying and you see so many people building stuff that doesn't comply to regs, only to fail scrutineering wasting all that time, effort, money, entry fee and so on!

Yer we made a few errors early on like buying wrong spec parts but luckily nothing expensive and we quickly learned from our errors. The guys at the motor club have been great giving us freebies and cheap parts.

Holy thread revival!

5 years on and the project has slowly but steadily progressed, the main barrier being money. However, this year is the year the car should compete in it's first stage rally.

The last remaining jobs are to plumb in the extinguisher, purchase another harness, sticker it up and get it log booked.

I still need to do my BARS test and purchase some overalls and a helmet/HANS device, so a little bit of cost to go yet.

The car should be doing an evening trackday at Teesside in June as a bit of a shakedown. The car hasn't turned a wheel on the road for 5 years so I'm sure there will be a few surprises there!

The aim is to get the car ready and entered to compete on the Tyneside stages, which is the 2nd August.

There are still upgrades planned as money allows such as a set of 4 pots, an LSD and putting an engine in that will be class competitive to name a few, but the main thing is the car should be out and doing what it was built to do shortly.

Car now done, it will be in for log booking in the next few weeks. I've purchased the Go Rallying pack from the MSA so will be booking a BARS test in the next couple of weeks.

Car is now fully MSA logbooked, taxed, tested and insured. I've completed my BARS test and now have a Nat B race licence. Entry is in for the Tyneside stages rally in 2 weeks time (https://www.rallies.info/webentry/2015/tyneside/entries.php?type=u) and car prep is going well. Ironed out a few issues over the past few weeks and will continue to test.

Recent work has included;

New water pump
Replaced track rods and ends
Tracking done on Hunter machine
Polybushed dogbone
Fitted Focus ST170 calipers with DS3000 pads and Performance Friction RH665 fluid
Braced the brake servo to stop bulkhead flex
New spark plugs
Oil change

The car needs the radiator replaced as it has a small leak when under high pressure. Also in need of some tyres, a pair of softs and a pair of mediums needed. Totally skint at the moment!

The car is now a fully fledged rally car. 5 events started, 3 finishes. Best finish so far is 32nd overall on the DCC stages last weekend.
