Track Car Under £1000?

A twin cam D series Honda engine will have similar power to that 306. Single cam is a bit less, 115bhp abouts

They came in the honda civic and some other models. Hondas can be expensive because of their reputation to last but I have seen them go cheap
Concerto is one unpopular honda model, 135bhp and should be going for a hundred or so since they are all over 10 years old now

Also it was an engine used in the rover 200, again available for hundred(s)

If its just a track car, why dont you get something thats failed an mot like an old bmw with abs failed or something. You can easily get a 7 series for under a grand with a short mot, so I bet any model in their range is available under similar circumstances.

CRX is overvalued imo, the only ones cheap enough will be the ones with a d series and you might as well get what I said above. It is very light of course :)

This may sound stupid (in fact I know it does) but why don't you try getting an "old banger" with a huge V8/V12 engine and stripping out all the weight? Take an XJ Jag and take all the seats, wood, all that stuff out to get the weight down as much as possible. You say you're only using it for track days, so you won't need all the fancy comfort options.

Remember that episode of Top Gear when they did that with the XJS? That's what I'm talking about.

Check ebay for Jags, you can get them quite cheap now.

Hi, For a track day car, the Saxo VTS is a brilliant car, Parts are cheap and there easly modded, The standard is the 1.6 Litre 120Bhp, 0-60 in around 7 seconds !

Which is very fast, spend £200 more later on- and you can get around £140-160 brake horsepower easily

Jay !

Tell me where I can get some 264 degree cams, 4-2-1 manifold, decat, 2" bore exhaust, enclosed induction kit and a remap for £200 to get 160bhp :p

DIY ? Decat means disconnect the exhaust after the manifold and so on :D

I've seen a vid of saxo beating a m3 on the qtr mile but I bet that cost fairly big bucks :o

I've seen a vid of a micra beating a Ferrari in a drag race. Dont make it any good as standard though.

dam I'd like to see that :D Cheap usually means mod or fix it yourself whichever car. Ive no idea if saxo is any good as stock, at least its light ?

There is the supermarch for mircras, super and turbo chargers as stock. Probably not cheap, no idea

M Developments supercharged vts. About £5k inc labour iirc.

This threads really opened my eyes to loads more options.

I wold say the main contenders are :

205 GTi (1.6 or 1.9)

VW Golf MK2 (8v or 16v)

Saxo VTS

Old BMW of some sort, possibly 318 as NickXx mentioned.

All of the above can be had for under £1000, and before this thread I only had the 205 in my head.

I do like the idea of the Saxo aswel, as it is the newest car on the list.

I know lopez has a vast knowledge of 205 GTi's so any info would be great on what to look out for etc :)

Would you say my initial idea of a 306 Xsi was a bad idea compared to the above listed cars?

Hi there

As I've driven nearly all the cars your considering I can tell you the MK2 Golfs make excellent track cars. For track 16v models are better as they have more power in upper revs and on track you spend all the time at high revs. Plus the Golfs are very reliable and can withstand a good thrashing.

However for maximum fun try finding one of the straight 6 BMW's, RWD, superb chassis and reliable cars if you get a good one. :)

Are they not cheap in Australia too, being closer to Japan and all ?

Nope :(

They cost about 5000-1000 AUD down here :(

Hurray for Tarrifs to keep holden afloat :(
