I've thought about this for a while and spoke about it in a few threads, but now I'm close to taking the plunge :p

I've got a CB500s (half fairing) and I'm thinking of taking it off the road and using it for track days only. I'd obviously be taking it off the road so no insurance/tax etc, what sort of mods would be worthwhile doing and are there any special requirements? I've seen a few photo's of bikes on track days and mirrors have been removed, headlights taped up etc.

The possibilites are endless :p

But yea minimum take off mirrors dont need them, and I would remove the headlight completely and replace with a blank number board or something if its track only bike.

Other worthwhile mods imo are some reputable rearsets as you can usualy get replacement individual parts for when you go down, also I find shorty levers great on track and so far ive not had them catch when I have gone down, where as the standard long levers were always getting bashed or broken.

As fireskull said remove anything and everything you don't need for the road.

Van, sticky tyres , tyre warmers , fuel cans , good 1 piece leathers , decent toolkit and get the suspension setup properly !

Always ride within your limits and don't be intimidated by the speed of the other riders, remember you are not racing ! ;)

You'll be totally addicted ! :D

on another note as its already been said.... make sure if you want to be safe go to a track that suits the bike i.e. not snetterton as otherwise you'll be a mobile chicane to the have a go heroes on R1s etc. Just a note to stop you being T-boned by someone else. :)

Hey cheers for the replies :) I hadn't thought of keeping away from tracks like that!

I love how you say "when" I go down, not if :p What's the score with leathers? I was just thinking of getting some really cheap leathers or possibly second hand?

Are there any tracks you'd recommend close to the Lakes? Three Sisters looks like a good track but there doesn't seem to be any mention of track days for motorbikes on their website?

If you go on track regularly yea its when not if :p

Leathers are a requirement on any track, cheap leathers are fine just get ones that fit! dont see a problem with second hand either.

Dont know of the three sisters track, what usual races there? there are a few tracks that dont do bike track days..

Well it wouldn't be as much fun if there was no risk of some pain :D

I was told of the three sisters track a few years ago by a guy who raced classic bikes there (Wigan) and recommended it. From the website it looks like its predominately kart racing/supermoto though http://www.three-sisters.co.uk

As the saying goes.. Its your ass, not mine.. :D

:p I dropped by my local kart track this morning and what do I find, some motorbikes razzing around!! I didn't stay for too long so not sure what classes were running yet but what I did see appeared to be 50/125cc bikes all mixed up, weird looking things, normal race style bikes and a couple of scooters (one of which was going faster than some bikes!)

This track is about 8 minutes drive from my house so if they run regular meets I can see me getting a cheapo small bike and taking part, cheap, looks like great fun and fairly slow speeds which means less chance of breaking bones and needing time off work (or the p45!).
