I'm pretty sure there's a thread on here about this stuff but I can't find it. Point me to it if it's relevant.

Tax rebate + birthday = money towards shooting round a track

I'm looking for a days tuition/fun on a track (below the midlands) that is actually worth the money and has a decent amount of track time. As a point of reference, I'm looking at stuff like Castle Combe's advanced driving experiences (£260-£280) but would go for something like a Palmersport day at Bedford if the price was around £300 (these are usually corporate events costing over a grand, OcUK meet anyone :) )

I don't want the response that I should buy a cheap banger and take it to a trackday as I've done that more than once.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I want to feel like I've learnt something at the end of the day as well as feeling utterly exhilarated.

Location wise, I live in London and have family in Bristol. I've probably done about 20-24 laps of Castle Combe (vids at www.robcheyne.co.uk).

Cheers!

Have to say, this would interest me to.

I have been looking at Ben Elliot, who also provides training. Exclusive use of the track would be nice (OcUK meet??)

Since purchasing my Jap Rocket (tm), I would like to try out the track, but having never done it, would like a little guidance to start with.

Castle Coombe is not too far from me, and Thruxton is close ish as well..

Problem with the South West, all the 'normal' track day Tracks are miles away..

I will follow this thread with interest.

I'd love to go on an advanced driving course with track time and talks/practical on how to basically get great lines etc...

Don't think my 1.7 dti astra would be up to it though so would have to be somewhere with a nice car to use :D

I'll be following this thread!

Ben elliot looks like the right kind of thing, tad to expensive seeing as I'd want to do the NSX course :D Anymore suggestions? Looks like we have some takers if we need to go as a small select group.

i cant go on any of these courses

most of them have an 18 stone weight limit

i mean, if i can play 5 a side football for half an hour without problems, and can fit in these cars

then i dont see the problem. If anything i even had to pull the seat forward in the 911 i drove !

What do people reckon on deciding between performance road cars or single seater days? I don't really mind on the face of it, I like the idea of being in a fast road car, but maybe the single seater days attract better teaching/punters?

Any comments from people who've done both?

Don't bother with the single seaters - they restrict your over-taking and speed. I got sent to the pits for being too close to the car in front, hinting for them to go faster as we weren't allowed to overtake.

Had more fun doing the track master in an Exige. If you can, I'd go for the JP1 at Bedford - tbh it looks the best for serious enthusiasts. I've been looking into getting on this one too.

An OCuK meet for this wouldn't be a bad idea too...

Well, I did a owners club track day with the vx220.org.uk members at Keevil (Wilts). £99 for the day , open pitlane , so as much track time as you want.

Because we booked as a group we got free track instructors too.

It was a fantastic day, no speeds limits or stupid rules , just maximum fun. Bit warm though as it was just this Monday, mind you 140mph wind cools you down nicely.

Unfortunately a bring-you-own day isn't going to happen.

Ahhh, there we go. The trackmaster Exige at Silverstone looks about right. But over budget. Helloooo Mr. Credit card.

Is the Bedford one cheaper?

Who's up for this then? :D

JP1 = Palmersport? Seen any prices? I couldn't.

Increased tyre/suspension wear?

Increased fuel costs?

:p

ill avoid blowing my top at you, and instead try and be rational.

a ferrari F355 (typical car at these experiences) weighs approximately 1230 KG

with a skinny 10 stone bloke on board, plus say skinny 10 stone instructor its gonna way roughly 1356 KG

but with me at 20 stone instead of the 10 stone skinny bloke its going to weigh roughly 1419kg

thats a percentage increase of around 4.6%

are you seriously telling me that a weight increase of 4.6% is going to seriously effect tyre wear and fuel costs ?

and thats before we take account of the fact they accept men of 18 stone which is an increase on those figures of 3.76% surely another 0.9% isnt going to make any real difference ?

Geez, chill (if that's possible at the moment) He was just making a suggestion!

Most of these places seem to also say that they are reasonably leanient, short but heavy? Fine. Tall but skinny? Fine. Don't feel you have to avoid blowing your top til you know why they impose these limits. Tis strange though, as you say, you can get in the door and you're not an unfit person (it seems). I'll ask if I go!
